Four years ago, I visited Kutch for the first time.

I fell in love with its culture and stories.
The people, the craft, the history—everything inspired me.
That trip sparked a dream deep within me.

A dream to create something truly my own.

Kutch taught me to dream big and stay fearless.
It gave me the courage to pursue creativity.
Today, I celebrate the small steps I’ve taken.

This is just the beginning.

PS: Which place has left a lasting impact on you?

Multiple blocks come together to create a single pattern/motif in Ajrakh.

The key blocks include:
🔹 Rekh – Outlines the intricate design.
🔹 Datta – Fills in the detailed pattern.
🔹 Gad – Completes the background seamlessly.

A five-color design may use 16 blocks.

Every press must align with absolute accuracy.

Motif placement and pressure define the final print.

A story carved into wood.

Each motif of Ajrakh comes to life through the precise work of skilled artisans. Here’s a peek into the process:

• Wood Selection: Babul wood, known for its strength, is chosen for its fine texture.

• Design Transfer: The design is traced onto paper and carefully transferred to the wood using a clay-water mix.

• Engraving: A chisel etches the design into the wood with precision.

• Drilling: Fine holes are drilled to prevent air bubbles, ensuring smooth dye application.

• Carving: Artisans carve intricate motifs, using different chisels for fine details.

The time to create each block varies from days to months, depending on the design’s complexity.

Have you ever seen a hand-carved block? 🌟

Could this be the origin of Ajrakh?

In Arabic, the word for the blue sky is 'Azraq'

The extensive use of indigo in this ancient craft might have prompted the name.

Fabrics found in sites like Fustat, Egypt, trace their origins back to India.

Perfected by civilizations around the Indus River, the earliest known use of Ajrakh is seen in the 'Kakkar' cloud pattern on the Priest King idol from Mohenjo Daro.

The craft's geometric patterns continue to thrive today.

Legend says that Ajrakh printers are descendants of King Rama.

The Kshatriya (Hindu warrior) caste eventually became the Khatris, migrating from Sindh to Kutch about 400 years ago.

PS: Have you had the chance to see this craft in person?

2025 was the year of the quiet work.

We learned that growth doesn’t always require letting go.

Sometimes, it asks us to embrace the friction.
HUEMAD is the sum of every anxious hour, every refined stitch, and every fragment carried from our archives.

We are carrying an identity forward -
one rooted in Indian craft, shaped for the woman moving through the world today.

The evolution begins now.
