Organising Ourselves: With Filthy Fox Auction Club and 3D Women - (Free tickets in Bio) Join us on Friday 30 May for an open informal Q and A hosted at LAS Gallery with Paula Parole @paula_parole of Filthy Fox Auction House and Winnie Hall @winnie_hall of 3D Women, two artists who, alongside their full time practices, continue to selflessly build and deliver independent projects for their communities. We also welcome Celeste McEvoy @celeste__mcevoy of 3D Women to join the conversation. Together we will explore what it means to organise outside the system, especially when that system was never built to support artist run or grassroots organisations. This talk is a valuable opportunity for anyone interested in self organising & graduates navigating the art world for the first time. Other topics up for discussion include: - Why do we self organise - What does it mean to build something sustainable when no one is paying you to do it - What is the difference between doing something because you love it and doing it because no one else will - How do we keep our practices at the centre while supporting others This is a space for honest conversation, collective reflection, and imagining what could come next. LAS invites will be open from mid day for anyone wishing to visit the exhibition before we close our doors after the evening event. This event forms part of our commitment to put artists back at the centre and to provide for our growing community! It is finals day today and we reveal: - at 5pm the artist who will be reward an online solo show - at 6pm the artist who will be invited to participate in a group show in our gallery in Cologne. About: Again for the 5th ART MATTERS round, it was not easy for us to choose only 15 artists for our online exhibition out of the many great submissions we received in response to our 5th Open Artist Call. But it definitely was a great pleasure to discover and get to know so many great artists! There is so much remarkable art out there, but we cannot show it all in our gallery. The ART MATTERS series allows us to present many artistic positions from all over the world to a wider online audience twice a year for a little more than 2 weeks. Many thanks to all of you who follow this project, some of you for 5 issues by now, and many thanks also to – most of all – all the participating artists, especially to our Top 15 and the 45 Honourable Mentions (still some to be featured today). // ART MATTERS 5 1 new artist daily at 6pm CET Day 6 of our 5th ART MATTERS group exhibition and we are pleased to present the Seattle-born artist Elliott Mickleburgh @bytebop (*1990, lives and works in London) with his conceptual photo work “XX.XX.XX Choreographic Reference for Jewelry Advert“ from 2021 (Archival Inkjet Print, A2 sheet size, 49 x 66 cm framed, edition of 3 + 2AP). About Elliott Mickleburgh: ​Executed through the eclectic materials that emerge during the production and representation of luxury commodities such as clothes, jewelry, and cosmetics, “XX.XX.XX“ is an interdisciplinary project that reflects on and retells the biblical narrative of the Annunciation. In making advertisements and the products they describe, documents and objects […] all come to indicate a condition of labor and ingenuity that takes place before and during the making of something […]. The Annunciation carries a similar impression of the prototypical: […] this chronicle describes the pomp and ceremony around the archangel Gabriel descending from the heavens to inform Mary that she will eventually become the Mother of God on Earth. Like the earliest production stages of creating luxury goods and their fetishized images, the Annunciation is an internal communication stating that more communication has yet to come, a message declaring […] that something extraordinary will happen but not quite yet. About ART MATTERS 5: We selected 15 finalists via our latest Open Artist Call. Until 23 April, we present their submitted artworks one after the other on our website and Instagram, every day at 6pm CET, with the exhibition slowly coming together as a whole. Our Top 15 is rounded off by "Honourable Mentions", in which we acknowledge the works of 45 artists who just missed the final cut (posted in our Instagram stories). On Sunday 24 April, we will announce for the first time two instead of one winner and reward an online solo show (at 5pm) and an invitation to participate in an exhibition in our gallery space in Cologne (at 6pm).
