I found the happiest people on Earth in Ghana, Africa.

Over the last three weeks, I’ve learned about the beautiful Ghanaian culture in and out of hospitals, schools, orphanages, churches, and midwifery colleges. This experience has been a dream come true.

15 years ago, my sister Emily came to Ghana with the BYU Nursing program, and a dream was planted in little Mellie’s heart that someday, SOMEDAY, I’d get to meet these people that Emily loved so much. I remember saving quarters in a jar day by day, imagining the moment I’d finally board a plane to Accra, Ghana.

15 years later, I finally made it.

And somehow, it felt exactly like I imagined it would. I’ve fallen in love with the same country, the same culture, the same smiles, and the same children that Emily fell in love with a decade and a half ago.

I’ve been brought to tears several times as I’ve witnessed the miracle of life here. I watched babies enter the world through miraculous births, saw bodies battle illness with incredible strength, and also witnessed battles that came to an end far too soon. Through every high and low, there was still so much light.

Despite their hardships, I can confidently say I met the happiest people. In every story I saw hope. I saw resilience. And through the difficulty, I saw joy.
