After more than 12 years working in strength & conditioning, this framework has become increasingly important to me.

Not because it gives the coach less responsibility - but because it gives the athlete more ownership.

The original concept was presented by coach Ashley Jones during his lecture at the @the_asca Conference in 2017, and I believe it remains highly relevant in modern high-performance environments.

For me, the key message is simple: experienced athletes should not only follow the process. They should understand it, question it, contribute to it, and gradually take responsibility for managing it.

This is exactly where data becomes so valuable.

The monitoring systems, testing protocols, and performance metrics we use should not become another layer of control. They should become an additional layer of reasoning - helping us communicate better, educate more clearly, and justify our recommendations to athletes who are ready to be treated as partners in the process.

Of course, not every athlete passes this test.

In many cases, a lack of independence also reflects a lower level of sporting maturity, insufficient ownership, and organisational chaos around the athlete.

The goal is not to remove coaching.

The goal is to move from authoritarian prescription toward guided autonomy - where the coach still provides expertise, direction, and accountability, but the athlete becomes an active decision-maker rather than a passive executor.

Athletes should be treated as equal partners in the performance process. The old authoritarian model of coaching is slowly disappearing. A new era of relationships in sport is coming - and in my opinion, it cannot come fast enough.

2016 throwback - Looking back, it was an incredible year. The Black Sticks made it to the Olympics, and we had that epic but heartbreaking quarterfinal match, not to mention the historic win against Australia on our home turf after more than 50 years.
I had the opportunity to speak at conferences worldwide alongside industry leaders like Kobes and the Lakers' ex-trainer @garyvitti, and at the Post Olympic Games S&C symposium in the Netherlands.
I also spent some time with the Black Sticks athletes playing professionally in Netherlands and Belgium to gain deeper understanding of how they live and train there, and made it to Tyne Cot cemetery to pay my respects, which was a humbling experience.
Oh, and I graduated with a Master's degree and First Class Honours. 2016 was a year of significant personal growth. Fond memories.

2025 ⚡️ REBUILD

In 2025, my race calendar was lighter, but the pressure to perform was building again.

// I focused on getting back to the fundamentals with @EdgeCycling, supported by my family, friends, sponsors, coaches, community, @MyStlukes doctors/physical therapy, @pharmacy_athlete, Rosemarie Rotenger and @P2PChiro - a collective effort that helped get me back on the podium and break a track and national record.

🙏 Grateful for everyone who supported me, believed in me, and stayed along for a quieter chapter — because the rebuild always comes before the breakthrough 🌞🇺🇸 Excited to be in Los Angeles with the National Team program, training in a high-performance environment that continues to raise the standard as we build toward the World Cup season and even bigger goals ahead in 2026 together. Progress sieht nicht jeden Tag gleich aus. Manchmal ist es mehr Gewicht, manchmal bessere Technik – und manchmal einfach nur, dass man hingegangen ist.
