The first time @zumiism saw a tattoo was when he was 15 and in prison. “It made a deep impression on me…after I got out, I’d use a needle with thread at school to tattoo myself.” Now he’s renowned for the big and intricate Irezumi style tattoos he creates. Tattooing was just recently legalized in Korea, and this issue of DISINTEGRATION, curated by @victorjwebster with translations by @c47creative dives into the expanding industry in a place where it’s been illegal for so long. Other artists featured: @tattooist_doy @wan.tattooer @arang_eleven @moon.cheon @yuuztattoo @goyohal Get a copy at afterlifepress.com

“I think I have this opposite style because I’m more into traditional tattooing, traditional style, and old school, you know? So I became more interested in old music, old fashion, and old culture.” — @wan.tattooer Featured in our new issue of DISINTEGRATION, @wan.tattooer presents a different aesthetic in Korean tattooing, one that feels reminiscent of an underground fringe scene. “I think tattoos without culture are unappealing, so I wanted to incorporate Korean culture into my tattoos. Actually, as I was studying the culture, I realized that I had seen a lot of these things growing up — like this furniture here and the paintings in my dad’s and grandma’s house.” — @goyohal Read more from @goyohal and other amazing Korean tattooers in the newest issue of DISINTEGRATION curated by @victorjwebster with translation by @c47creative Other tattooers featured include @zumiism @tattooist_doy @wan.tattooer @arang_eleven @moon.cheon @yuuztattoo Get yours now at afterlifepress.com 🍒

@c47creative was given the unique opportunity to translate interviews @victorjwebster conducted with Korean tattoo artists for the fourth and latest issue of Disintegration, the magazine produced by @afterlifepress, our friend @zacscheinbaum's publishing imprint. The timing could not be more fortuitous, as tattooing was only legalized in Korea exactly one year ago. We are extremely grateful to have participated in this project and hope that this issue exposes global readers to Korean perspectives that they cannot learn about via mainstream cultural exports. Conversely, we also hope that the issue helps Korean readers understand why global audiences have so much interest in Korea and what they're actually curious about.  Special thanks to @tammykimtattoo for connecting the dots and bringing us all together! -- @c47creative team: Translation: @sjlocascio Editing: @philchang__ The issue also features @c47creative's first print ad! Spearheaded by @victorjwebster our newest issue of DISINTEGRATION is focused solely on Korean artists who represent a wide range on tattoo artistry. In 2023, Victor travelled to the South Korea Tattoo Convention to interview as many tattooers as possible, and what came from the trip is this issue, which stands alone in both scope and presentation. Our first bilingual publication, featured interviews were conducted in both English and Korean, and adapted for print by the amazing team at @c47creative. To say that we are honored to present this issue is an understatement. 🤘🏼🖤 Available very soon 🕷️🕷️ Featuring @zumiism @tattooist_doy @wan.tattooer @arang_eleven @moon.cheon @yuuztattoo @goyohal
