A wonderful initiative that reflects the true value of investing in people and culture. Congratulations to Bassam Freiha and the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation for providing Zayed University students with the opportunity to share their work with the public and gain real-world experience. Supporting young artists today is an investment in the future of our cultural landscape, and it is always encouraging to see art philanthropy creating opportunities that benefit the entire community.

The Institution House at @sikkaplatform - House 348 Crurated by Zena Adhami and Alanood Bukhammas. A living, communal space where design institutions across the UAE gather, sit, speak, think, and make...together. Around and through this space, UAE-Based design institutions establish a temporary “shared studio.” Students, faculty, and creatives sit together. The emphasis is not on finalized outcomes, but on process, on how ideas are formed, tested, questioned, and reshaped through dialogue. As a temporary space within Sikka, Ashya’a reflects the realities of design education and design practice in the UAE today, collectively, and deeply rooted in conversation. It invites visitors not only to observe, but to enter the space, take a seat, and become part of the ongoing process. Design Lead: @mahmouddd4 @sikkaplatform @dubaiculture

The Story Behind the Story: Uncovering the National Pavilion UAE’s Hidden Legacy⁣ ⁣ Asma Bukhammas reflects on how her 2014 internship with the National Pavilion UAE shaped a lasting approach to design and research — one that blends personal narratives with formal history. ⁣ ⁣ Now a researcher and educator, she continues this methodology in her study of Al Fahidi, using women’s oral histories to challenge dominant narratives and reveal stories of joy, agency, and everyday life.⁣ ⁣ Illustrations by Fatima Obaid Al Shamsi, featured in ‘Beyond the Grand Narrative of Al Bastakiya: Ayesha Al Bastaki and the Windtower Houses of Old Dubai’, published in the International Journal of Architectural Research.⁣ ⁣ القصة وراء القصة: كشف الإرث الخفي للجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات⁣ ⁣ تتأمل أسماء بخماس في كيفية تأثير تدريبها الصيفي عام 2014 مع الجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات على تبنّي نهج دائم في التصميم والبحث.

The Story Behind the Story: Uncovering the National Pavilion UAE’s Hidden Legacy⁣ ⁣ In 2020, Asma Bukhammas, Instructor at the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University Dubai, led a studio on Safa Park during early COVID, inviting students to explore personal and collective memories tied to the park’s redevelopment. The brief challenged students to imagine two structures — one old, one new — at the park’s edge, sparking reflections on what gets preserved or lost in a rapidly changing city. ⁣ ⁣ This project builds on the legacy of the 2014 National Pavilion UAE, continuing to inspire how memory and place shape design in the Gulf.⁣ ⁣ القصة وراء القصة: كشف الإرث الخفي للجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات⁣ ⁣ في عام 2020، قدّمت أسماء بخماس، مُحاضرة كلية الفنون والمشاريع الإبداعية بجامعة زايد دبي، استوديو تصميم حول حديقة الصفا خلال بدايات جائحة كورونا، حيث دعت الطلاب لاستكشاف الذكريات الشخصية والجماعية المرتبطة بإعادة تطوير الحديقة.

The Story Behind the Story: Uncovering the National Pavilion UAE’s Hidden Legacy⁣ ⁣ Building on the legacy of memory and place in design education.⁣ ⁣ In 2020, Asma Bukhammas, Instructor at the @cace_zu at Zayed University Dubai and 2014 Venice intern alumna, led a design studio centered on Safa Park — a site rich with personal and collective memories. ⁣ ⁣ Amid the challenges of early COVID and remote learning, the project invited students to reconnect emotionally with their surroundings by exploring the park’s ongoing redevelopment. Students were tasked with a speculative brief: imagine two structures—one original, one new—occupying the boundary between the old park and the new development. Would these buildings connect, clash, or blend? ⁣ ⁣ This challenge encouraged critical reflection on preservation, erasure, and contested narratives of place, while students engaged in conversations with their families to activate memory as a research tool. This approach continues the thread from the 2014 National Pavilion UAE exhibition "Lest We Forget" — a practice grounded in lived experience, narrative, and public space that shapes how design is taught and imagined in the Gulf today.⁣ ⁣ القصة وراء القصة: كشف الإرث الخفي للجناح الوطني لدولة الإمارات⁣ ⁣ تعليم التصميم انطلاقًا من الذاكرة والمكان.⁣ ⁣ في عام 2020، قدّمت أسماء بخماس، مُحاضرة كلية الفنون والمشاريع الإبداعية بجامعة زايد في دبي وخريجة برنامج تدريب البندقية 2014، استوديو تصميم ركّز على حديقة الصفا بوصفها موقعًا غنيًا بالذكريات الشخصية والجماعية.⁣ ⁣ في ظل جائحة كورونا والتعليم عن بُعد، دعا المشروع الطلاب إلى إعادة التواصل مع محيطهم من خلال استكشاف إعادة تطوير الحديقة.
