How do I prepare for a shoot? 🎥 Location scouting is a HUGE part of it These are some frames from a location scout at @barracks.la for my short film called Wrong Question Doing this really helps me visualize exactly how and where a shot may be able to happen. Being able to have reference points before the actual production is such a game changer and alleviates a ton of stress when it comes to the day Cadrage is a great app to figure out your lens focal lengths, framing, etc. (the camera app on your phone works too) or if you can bring a camera with a zoom lens even better :) Hope this helps🫶🏼 #cinematography #cinematographer #composition #framing

8 documentaries deep into the year has taught us a lot about process. 3 tools in particular have become non-negotiable in how we plan, shoot and source inspiration… no gatekeeping here!! MILANOTE @milanoteapp This is where every project we run lives, start to finish. Initial storyline ideas, character arcs, mood boards, shot lists, schedules, budgets, location pins. It’s all mapped out in one connected space instead of scattered across a dozen docs and group chats. What makes it work for documentary specifically is the way a story can actually branch: you can lay out competing narrative threads side by side, see how they connect, and restructure the whole thing visually before a single frame is shot. It’s become our front-end and back-end planner in the same tool. CADRAGE @cadrageapp The first thing that comes out on a recce or on set. Cadrage simulates almost any camera body, lens and sensor combination digitally, so you can stand in a location and see exactly what a shot will look like before you’ve rigged anything up. For example: in this shot we were checking an 18mm on a Sony FX6 with DZO Arles Cinema Primes at 2.39:1, inside a building where we wanted to get the entire structure in. Knowing the frame before we committed saved us from reworking the whole setup when it came to filming. Frameset @frame.set Our go to app the moment we’re stuck for ideas. Frameset searches frames from across film and TV using simple descriptions. It’s become the fastest way to pin down a reference when we’re trying to describe a look to a DP or explain a mood to a client, without digging through our own memory of films we half remember. #documentary #filmmaking #filmmakers #cinematography #filmmakingtips

It all started with lots of adventure, exploration, and play!! We knew we needed to show off the beauty and magic of the Colorado mountains and find compelling angles to help tell a story, 70% of which was going to take place inside of a tent!! We didn’t have a big budget, but what we could give each other was time in preproduction to scout and play with things before the crunch of production. So the director @jse.exe and I went on many adventures to the mountain valley where we would shoot this movie and where he grew up camping! We also set up the tent and blocked out the entire movie with “standins!!” @cadrageapp was extremely useful in this process of play and exploration, and meant that by the time we got to creating a shot list, we had an idea of what many of the frames would look like. Colorado friends, @piggyduster is coming home! Don’t miss your chance to see this special Colorado movie on the big screen!! Sunday, October 11 🔴Red Carpet: 6:00 PM 🎥Screening: 7:00 PM Monday, October 12 🔴Red Carpet: 3:30 PM 🎥Screening: 4:30 PM
