Thank you @bigfootkidsbookfest @brick_and_mortar_books for such a fantastic event to connect with readers, librarians, booksellers, teachers, and other kidlit folks! I only wish there had been more time. The energy was incredible, with so many passionate readers excited to be there, myself included!

I loved meeting readers who saw themselves in my books. Families with roots in Hong Kong were excited for JIA HAS A DOG PROBLEM @isabellakungill and THE MAGNIFICENT BANYAN AND THE GREEN TONG LAU @ishitajain24. People from places where banyan trees grow, such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and India, were excited for BANYAN too. Families with Filipino members were excited for A ROOF @cafedandy, and the tiger lovers, including folks from schools with tiger mascots, were thrilled for YOU CAN’T TAME A TIGER @julienchungdesigns. 🐅✨

Thank you to my publishers @kokilabooks and @owlkidspublishing for bringing these stories into the world!

It was so good seeing old friends and making new ones. Thank you to everyone who came up to say hi! If we didn’t get a chance to chat, I’m sorry I missed you. @zoey.abbott I sat next to you but never got to say hi!

P.S. Chicken rice @ama_chickenrice hit the spot after! 🍗

Plot twist: they’re even kinder in person. 😭 After 3 books together, we finally traded emails and PDFs for donuts and hugs.

Thank you @kokilabooks @jazymberto @tweetpathi @paperbackruins for the warm welcome! 🍩📚🧡

Looking for a Filipino children's book that teaches kindness, community, and cultural pride? 🇵🇭📚

A Roof! by Stephanie Ellen Sy is a beautiful celebration of bayanihan—the Filipino spirit of helping one another through life's challenges.

When Maya discovers her neighbour's roof after a typhoon, she sets out to return it. Along the way, her community comes together, each person offering their unique gifts to help rebuild what was lost. It's a powerful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can strengthen a community.

At SUMMIT, we believe the stories we share today help our children grow deeper roots so they can reach greater heights tomorrow. A Roof! invites young readers to see the beauty of Filipino values like compassion, cooperation, resilience, and belonging—while celebrating the people and traditions that make our culture so rich.

Whether you're raising little readers in the Philippines or abroad, this is a story that opens meaningful conversations about heritage, identity, and what it means to care for one another.

💛 Perfect for families, classrooms, and anyone looking to add more Filipino children's books and multicultural picture books to their bookshelf.

Fishing before dawn, dancing in the garage, making ramen, returning a roof, driving through the night, translating for each other, 8,000 miles away and still everywhere, and still at the lake.

When disaster strikes, who will come and help?

A young girl discovers a whole roof had landed outside her home in the Philippines one morning after a long and stormy night, in A ROOF! (written by Stephanie Ellen Sy, illustrated by Daniel Tingcungco, published by Kokila)! After finding an address scrawled onto the roof, Maya and her dad set out to return it to the family it belongs to. On the way, Maya and her dad encounter many obstacles caused by the disastrous storm: debris from the crumbled hillsides, a flood from a raging river, and splintered trees strewn all over. Fortunately, they also come across many helpful neighbours. Will they be able to successfully deliver the roof back to its rightful owners?

In my opinion, a person is wealthy if they are surrounded by helpful, kind, and generous friends and neighbours who support each other as a community. The family in A ROOF! whose thin metal roof blew off because of a typhoon is actually wealthy in this sense then! I absolutely loved how Maya, her dad, and other neighbours and friends all came together to help rebuild after a disastrous typhoon. This beautiful community spirit is called “bayanihan”, rooted in the Filipino tradition of neighbours working alongside each other towards a common goal. The inspiring storyline, combined with the dynamic illustrations, reminds me of how much better and more hopeful our world could be if we all had this same bayanihan mindset…
