ARC Review

Due to Remy suddenly getting traded he has to leave his sister who recently moved to the area and his almost boyfriend. But to soften the blow his new teammate is his long time hockey idol. Jed is the goalie for his new team. With the captain being so persistent Jed has now got the task of not only mentoring Remy but also offering him his spare room. What’s the big deal? Letting Remy fall asleep in his bed? What could go wrong?

Remy and Jed 🥹. Firstly the side characters in this book was chief kiss especially the captain and Remy’s sister. What I loved most throughout the book was how they worked on their open communication. No they didn’t get it right straight away but every indifference put them a step closer to having the best communication. Similarly I love the consent throughout as it’s something that should be highlighted in every book. The pacing of the book was spot on and page turning.

Thank you to the author for an early copy - make sure to grab your copies tomorrow!!

If he put his mind to it, he was totally capable of more or less ignoring Jed except for maybe giving him a casual “Hey.”
Totally capable. But.
Jed was sitting on the bench in nothing but a towel.
Which, again, no big deal.
This was a locker room. Lots of guys were in towels.
It didn’t affect Remy at all.
He certainly wasn’t noticing the thick sprinkling of blond hair on Jed’s chest or the beads of water on his broad shoulders.
With all that not-noticing, Remy completely failed to give Jed any kind of greeting at all.
“Nice practice today,” Jed said finally, once Remy managed to meet his eyes.
“Thanks.” Remy tried to channel Petey’s chill vibe and failed, because his voice came out higher-pitched than usual.
Jed didn’t give any indication that he noticed Remy’s reaction to him. He kept talking like it was a normal chat between two regular teammates, one of whom definitely wasn’t checking the other out.
“I’m going to grab some food nearby. Want to join me?”
Well, damn. How was Remy supposed to be chill about that?
“Hal likes the defensive players to get to know each other,” Jed continued, maybe thinking that Remy needed the invitation explained.
“Right, yeah, makes sense.” Obviously, the invitation was about the team. Unfortunately, that didn’t change how not-ready Remy was for this. Once the words started, they didn’t stop. “Sure, sounds great. I’m hungry. So yeah, food is good.”
And now Jed was looking amused. It was actually hard to tell because his expression never changed much, so Remy couldn’t be completely sure. But Jed should be looking amused, because of course Remy had used about four times as many words as he needed, which was the exact opposite of chill.
Still. It wasn’t every day your former idol—not obsession, whatever Lily might claim—asked you out for a meal. Remy was allowed to be a little bit non-chill about this.

📱 ebooks

🌈 Last: Hot Ghost Summer (ExorSquad) by Sam Northman (ARC, purchased ebook & paperback). Addicting, entertaining, and definitely spooky. Highly recommend! 👍🏻

🌈 Current Read: Knocked Sideways by C.A. Gardner. I am thoroughly enjoying it. If my ADHD would ever behave, I’d easily get lost in it. So far, I say it’s a yes from me. 👍🏻

🌈 Next: Under Water by E.M. Lindsey (ARC). I’m looking forward to reading book two in this series. We met both MCs in the previous book, which I recommend reading first. Only because it’s out now and good. 👍🏻

🎧 audiobooks

🌈 Last: Anti-Hero by Kelly Fox (owned), narrated by Declan Winters. This is a re-read. I binged listened to the series for a second time. This book is what Kelly called 'murder-swoon', adventurous, emotional, and full of found family. Heed trigger warnings though. Heavy topics are talked about. 👍🏻

🌈 Current: Pieces of Home by Becca Neil (owned), narrated by Gary Furlong. This will be my first time listening to the audiobook. I prepared myself for the emotional journey by going through the above series. I’m looking forward to it. I hear the narration is **chef’s kiss**. The book itself is one of my most recommended books. 👍🏻

🌈 Next: Overeager by Grae Bryan (owned), narrated by Michael Ferraiuolo. I’m excited to FINALLY read this series. Michael F. Is a fav narrator of mine. Can’t wait to hear him bring this to life! 👍🏻

Achillean reads, LGBTQIA+ books, read queer all year, bookish, authors of bookstagram, MM romance.

Knocked Sideways by C.A. Gardner
5⭐ debut novel!

Knocked Sideways is a hockey romance about newly-traded rookie defenseman Remy and veteran goalie Jed. Now, I’m a SUCKER for a rookie x veteran pairing, especially when the rookie is feeling inadequate and the veteran feels unworthy of love. I just freaking live for this combo. So when I saw the initial blurb for this book I immediately signed up to read it. But as I learned more over the coming weeks the hype built up in my head was so enormous that I was worried the book wouldn’t live up to my expectations. This is what went through my head:

✨ Omg it’s a rookie x veteran book. Sign me up!
✨ It’s a GOALIE veteran? Give me all the goalie books!
✨ There’s a demi/gray ace MMC?! Sigh 🥹
✨ WAIT. There’s no third act breakup? Will this be a perfect book??
✨ Crap that teaser quote was really good.
✨ And THAT teaser quote was really good.
✨ I hope I like this book as much as it seems like I should 😩

And boy did this book live up to the hype in my head! Remy and Jed were so utterly perfect for each other and my heart exploded all over this book reading their story. Remy just wants someone to love him in the daylight, someone who values who he is and doesn’t just want to use him for body (unlike his crappy ex). Enter Jed, who Remy has had a crush on for yearsssss. According to his teammates, Jed is the most standup guy on the team. And boy is he swoony with Remy. Jed is demi and there have been very few people that he has been attracted to. He is also gray ace, and has had his own crappy exes who have made him feel badly about that. And Remy is such a consent king with Jed, always wanting to know what Jed wants and not wanting Jed to feel like he has to be a yes man. But Remy is filled with self-doubt that Jed isn’t really into Remy and that Jed will think Remy is being overeager and clingy. And Jed is filled with self-doubt that Remy will want more than Jed can give. (Hate the exes that made them think this way!) But they both have it so bad for each other and eventually the tension snaps.

Please keep reading below because I have so much more to say 😂

✨May contain spoilers✨

I cannot believe that this was this author’s debut. I had such a good time with this book and I cannot wait to read more from this series.

I’m a huge fan when it comes to a found family when there is so much love and support. From the players and the sister of Remy, I was here for every moment that was happening. When a book has an amazing found family, I’m in it for the long haul.

If you’re looking for something sweet with some drama that isn’t too much, this book is so for you.

Some drama did happen towards the end and it broke my heart for Jed. Poor guy just felt he wasn’t worthy but someone else was. It hurt his feelings.

When these two finally talked about certain things, I was so happy because communication is key in a relationship. And what I loved the most was just how the gruff character was so attentive towards Remy. And Remy was just so sweet.

I hope in the next book these two do pop back up because yes please!

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
