💥 Life-Changing Moments at the Taber Pheasant Festival – My Story, My Song, My Community 💥

If you've ever felt like mobility challenges or disabilities keep you on the sidelines, this post is for you. I want to tell you about our incredible experience at the Taber Pheasant Festival—where kindness, inclusion, and adventure met us at every turn. This festival wasn’t just about hunting; it was about being seen, heard, and valued. 🪶🫶💓

From the moment we arrived, the Calgary AHEIA and Alberta Conservation Association team wrapped us in support, teaching us safe gun handling and guiding us through our first upland bird hunt at a beautiful release site. Huge thank you to Sarah Marthaller, my AMAZING mentor, who went above and beyond—holding my gun when I got too tired so I could keep going. Her husband, Kris Marthaller, mentored my husband Christopher Barbosa, while their daughter Hanah Marthaller ran her two incredible flushing dogs, bringing so much joy to the hunt 🙌. And shoutout to Cassandra A. Hewitt, the INCREDIBLE podcaster from Harvest Your Own, who helped document our experience and even ensured I didn’t have to stand in line to get my meals at the pheasant dinner that evening. 🍽🫂🥣

When my energy gave out after the hunt and I had to switch to my wheelchair ♿️, I thought I might miss out on the Harvest Your Own Tips & Tasters Night with the LEGENDARY Wild Game Chef Brad Fenson. The restaurant was upstairs, and my heart sank 💔. But Julie Landry-DeBoer, the event organizer who wore many hats that week, didn’t hesitate. With the help of Chris and others, they gently moved my legs 🦵, held my arms, and made sure I could attend that fantastic evening of food, laughter, and learning. I was never treated like a burden. Instead, I was included at every step, like an equal.
