I wasn’t the best student, but I always made it a point to listen to advice from successful people, even it that advice wasn’t intended for me. In between my ninth and tenth grade summer, Cal Boyd to us to “Team Camp” at the University of Georgia. In between a few games, Coach Boyd told one of my friends that he was glad he cut him the previous year in hopes that it would give him a chip on his shoulder. My friend complained that Coach Boyd had said that, but I definitely saw his point. I am the author of ten personal-growth books. In my books, to make points, I use American historical figures. In my 6th book, “Alone at the Lunch Table: How to Rise from Rejection,” I use Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Alexander Hamilton, and MLK because all were underdogs and achieved extraordinary success. I’ve done several interviews in the media on this book, and I always bring up the fact that when people doubt you, it gets you into that “fight or flight” response which can lead you to have heightened alertness and attention, increased physical performance, faster pattern recognition, sharper memory encoding during intense moments, action over paralysis, competitive or performance enhancement. What’s most ironic about me listening to this advice by Coach Boyd was where (in italics) I heard it. Despite applying to The University of Georgia as an English major, making a perfect score on both the ACT/SAT essays (harder to do than perfect scores on both composites), and having a father who was arguably the most famous attorney in Georgia at the time, I still did not get in. I must have listened to what I would say years later in chapter 6 of the book: "when you get stung with discouragement, don’t try to push it away; let it stick around for a while to give you the motivation to not only get going, but get to the top.” Someone who has endured repeated rejection and kept moving forward often develops rare resilience, emotional control, and adaptability under pressure. A president with that kind of scar tissue is less likely to be ruled by ego, panic, or fear when the stakes are highest. I would be that type of president if elected in 2028.
