That’s a wrap on 100 years of Faust! 🎬

Thank you to everyone who joined us for three nights of F. W. Murnau’s silent cinema masterpiece, brought to life with a live score by multi-instrumentalist Chris Maric (@mindofmaric) on NMC’s Allen Theatre Organ.

Presented in partnership with Calgary Cinematheque (@calgarycinema), this centennial celebration brought a century-old tale of demons, angels, and deals with the devil back to the big screen.

Look back at Faust’s 100th anniversary!

Remapping Futures is travelling to Toronto! Following this screening will be readings and a group discussion with participants of the Reimagining Chinatown project 🏮📖

Date: Friday, Oct 23
Venue: Cecil Community Centre, Auditorium
Time: 7 PM (Doors open at 6:30 PM)
Free or PWYC

Films: @pengzuqiang @cyi_liu @daphmoney @gabrielgabrielgarble, Linda Zhang
Readings: Amy Yan, Mike Chong, Eveline Lam

Urban spaces and architecture bear witness to social and political transformations. Presenting multiple visions of the future in times of instability, these experimental short films traverse rural China in the 1960s-80s, disorienting streetscapes of Hong Kong, conversations between strangers across a ping-pong table at Seward Park, 3D scans of Toronto’s Chinatown, and a multicolor, geometric dreamland.

Using digital technology to reactivate history, the selected films collage and overlay the past and the present, imagining futures beyond what is currently possible.

RSVP for free tickets through link in bio 🎟️

Remapping Futures was first presented at @calgarycinema as part of Depixelating History, an exhibition curated by Gladys Lou at @the_new_gallery.

Special thanks to artist Linda Zhang, Beryl Tsang from @cecilcentre, @chinatownlandtrust, and all Planting Imagination participants

The first feature film by iconoclastic artist Lizze Borden, Born in Flames was shot guerilla style on weekends in pre-gentrification New York over a period of five years. Set ten years after a socialist-democratic revolution in the United States, the film explores the ways that marginalized groups such as women, people of colour, and queer people continued to be targeted and suppressed, and the efforts of community-organized intersectional groups to fight back. The film follows two women-run pirate radio stations, a women’s revolutionary army, and a socialist newspaper and focuses on the role that communication and direct action play in combating the propaganda of the ruling authorities. With a punk soundtrack and rebel sensibility, Born in Flames reminds us just how long the fight for equality for these marginalized groups has been ongoing and how far it has yet to go. We dedicate this film to women, people of color, and LGBTQ people in Alberta and around the world who continue to fight against governments that seek to minimize them, imprison them, and erase them.

Short films have always been one of my favourite art forms. So I’m honoured to have made the poster for this festival of surrealist shorts from the 1920s.

Huge thanks to @calgarycinema for trusting me with this one. It’s always a pleasure to work with Calgary’s culture scene. They’re the real deal.

Tickets are almost gone. Grab yours, this one’s going to be properly surreal.

Really proud to have designed the poster for Big Screen Bucket List, Calgary Cinematheque’s summer series dedicated to films that demand to be seen on a real screen.

The concept came from something that genuinely bugs me: every time a film gets reproduced across different formats, it loses something. The frame gets cropped. The composition breaks. Information the director put there on purpose, easter eggs, relationships between elements, simply disappears depending on what screen you’re watching on.

This series is about seeing those films whole. The way the director actually built them. Eyes finally filled with everything that was always there waiting.

Thank you @calgarycinema for the trust on this one 🙏🏻✨🎬

Beyond infrastructure and policy, the city is shaped by the stories we tell about it. Through film, branding, architecture, tourism campaigns, public art, media, and popular culture, cities are constantly constructing narratives about who belongs and what matters.

As Calgary continues its complex transformation into the third biggest Canadian city, competing visions of the city are beginning to emerge. Is Calgary a corporate city? A creative city? An oil capital? A cultural frontier? A prairie metropolis? Bringing together filmmakers and agents of culture this panel examines how myth, media, and creative industries influence public perception and civic imagination.

We’ve gathered noteworthy storytellers and film curators from our city to tell us how the present and future looks through the lens.

Please join us for ‘Who Makes the City? Mythmaking & Film’ with: @maryyohannes @brikneyspears @adam.dieselpower @gmckercher @adlong888 @cvidesc
