If you’ve been wanting to help but haven’t known what to do, please consider donating blood.

In the wake of the loss in Wainwright, it’s one practical way to support others who need care. I’m thankful for everyone who makes time to donate, and for the medical teams caring for patients and their families.

If you’re able and eligible, visit blood.ca to find an appointment. If you can’t donate, sharing the information may help someone else take that step.

Booking information verified with Canadian Blood Services.

The smaller price on the quote can distract you from what each unit costs.

For a Calgary shop or service business buying repeat supplies, start with the same specification and unit. A box, roll and case are not interchangeable.

Paste permitted quote details into Claude and try this prompt.

“Compare these packs using only the supplied details. Show item, specification, pack price, quantity, unit, currency, calculation and price per unit. Flag missing information or incompatible specifications. Keep shipping, tax and discounts separate. Do not invent conversion factors or recommend a purchase.”

Check the arithmetic yourself. Then confirm fees, storage space and how much you will actually use. The lower unit price can still mean buying stock you do not need.

Save this for your next supplier order.

An office day should offer more than a different desk.

If you’re asking your Calgary team to commute more often, be clear about what that time together will improve.

Hands-on training. A decision that needs the right people in the room. A problem you can solve together.

Plan the day around that work. Then ask your team whether it delivered.

What makes an office day worth the commute for you?

What’s coming off your list when Monday comes off your calendar?

If you’re taking the holiday off, check what actually fits into the rest of your week before promising it all for Friday.

Give Claude your available work blocks, task estimates and fixed deadlines. Keep confidential details out and leave room for interruptions.

Then paste this with your list.

“Plan these tasks within my available hours. Keep my time estimates and fixed deadlines unchanged. Flag dependencies and ask about missing details. Show the total hours, what won’t fit and what you suggest moving for my approval. Don’t change my calendar or send anything.”

Check the hours and customer commitments yourself before accepting the plan.

What usually throws your week off first, last-minute requests or tasks taking longer than expected?

Your team can’t take ownership if every decision still needs your permission.

Before your next day off, agree on what they can handle without calling you.

What’s the one work question that always interrupts your weekend?

Ever looked at a staff schedule, seen two people working and assumed the front desk was covered?

Then you realize they’re both taking lunch at noon.

It’s a small detail that’s surprisingly easy to miss.

Before sending out next week’s schedule, try running a quick coverage check with ChatGPT. Give it an approved copy with staff IDs, shift times, breaks and how many people each area needs. Ask it to flag any gaps and show how it worked them out.

You’ll still need to double-check who’s actually available to cover, but it’s one more way to catch mistakes before they become someone else’s problem.

The example in the slides is fictional.

What causes more scheduling headaches in your business, overlapping breaks or last-minute changes?

I don’t think you’ve saved time with AI if I have to spend longer figuring out what you sent me.

That’s my issue with a “slop grenade”. AI-generated work gets passed along without enough review, leaving you to sort it out.

Say I ask which supplier you’d hire. Five pages of comparisons won’t help much if the prices are unchecked and you haven’t picked one.

Use AI to help, absolutely. I still want to know what you recommend and why.

Would you rather receive the full comparison or a short recommendation you can ask questions about?

If your website could belong to any competitor, why should a customer choose you?

Start with your homepage and three Calgary competitors. Give ChatGPT with web search the exact page links.

Try this

“Compare the audience, main promise and supporting evidence on these pages. Include an exact short phrase, source URL and access date for each. Flag inaccessible pages and missing evidence. Do not infer service quality or invent customer results.”

Open the pages yourself and check the comparison.

Then look for one useful difference your business can prove. Saturday appointments, a specific service area or a clearly explained repair process might tell a customer more than “quality service”. Use only what’s true for your business.

Make that difference clear in your own words.

Which website phrase tells you the least about a business?

Some people become part of a city’s memory.

Johnny Gaudreau became part of Calgary’s.

For years, he gave our home city of Calgary the kind of moments that remind you why sports matter. The anticipation when he touched the puck. The goals. The playoff nights. The number 13 jerseys in the stands, on the streets and at rinks across the city.

But with time, you realize the moments themselves were only part of it.

What stays is how they made us feel.

Where we were. Who we watched with. The people sitting beside us. The chapter of our own lives that was unfolding at the same time.

Maybe that is one of the gifts of sport.

It marks time for us.

Years later, a name, a jersey or an old highlight can bring an entire part of your life back for a moment.

And maybe it reminds us to appreciate the chapter we’re in now.

Notice the people in the room.

Be there for the moments that seem ordinary.

Give something back to the communities that gave something to you.

And enjoy the game while it’s being played.

Johnny Hockey gave Calgary a lot to remember.

Calgary will remember him.

Thank you, Johnny.

Thinking of Johnny, Matthew, and everyone who loves them.

Forever #13 🏒

One of the last warm weekends where
everybody is outside right now and nobody will be in three weeks

The easiest weekends of the year to end up in somebody's yard, and most of us will spend them alone in our own.

Mid-September and the whole street is out. Firewood, deck furniture, two guys arguing about a gutter.

Nothing wrong with that. The work has to get done either way.

What we're trying is doing the same work with somebody else in it. Firewood goes twice as fast with two. A dump run is a dump run regardless. The guy across the fence has the same list we do, on the same Saturday, thirty metres away.

50% of Canadian men are at risk of social isolation. For men living alone it's 73%. Those numbers get worse once the yards empty out, and the yards empty out fast.

So we're asking for help with things we could manage alone. Not because we need it. Because asking is the part most of us are out of practice at, and a cord of wood is a low stakes place to get the reps in.

Two hours, a borrowed truck, somebody else's chainsaw that runs better than ours.

Nobody has to say anything heavy for it to count.

Monique Barrie, @mbarriem of @lhiproductions doesn’t measure success only by how far she has come.

She measures it by how many people she can help rise with her.

“I love elevating others and seeing them rise.”

Sometimes that means supporting an emerging artist. Sometimes it means introducing two people who should know each other, bringing attention to an important cause or opening a door for someone who has been overlooked.

Leadership isn’t about being the most important person in the room.

It’s about recognizing potential in others and using what you have to help that potential grow.

Because success becomes far more meaningful when it creates an opportunity for someone else.

Who helped you rise when you were still finding your way?

👇 Tag them below and let them know their support mattered.
