@unc_basketball coach Michael Malone, after Friday’s exhibition win over USC: “We do not want to be a mid-range shooting team. It’s just the worst shot in the game, so we want to live at the rim. We want to live at the foul line, and we want to get quality threes up.”

He also said his staff spends a lot of time talking about their shot spectrum. That’s good coaching. A shot spectrum is a ranked list of the shots your team wants, with layups and open threes at the top and the tough, contested stuff at the bottom. Alex Sarama writes in Transforming Basketball @transformingbasketball that a clear shot spectrum changes what players look for on the floor. Rob Gardner (@rob.gardner12) talked about the same idea at PGC (@pgc_coaching), a shot selection scale, when he joined us on No Way Out. His line: “you need to tell your players what success looks like.”

Here’s where I’d push it further. The spectrum belongs to the team, and the shooter is only the last player to touch the ball. So the question after a possession is whether the team found the best shot. Who else was open? Was there one more pass to a layup?

That’s where the constraints-led approach comes in. In plain words, the coach shapes the game and the players solve it. The coach changes the rules, the space, or the scoring, and that nudges players toward better choices without a lecture. Want more layups and corner threes? Make them worth more in a live scrimmage. The kids work out how to get them against a defender, with a clock running, which is where the decision has to be made anyway.

Then the debrief. Rob runs it at camp: play five or ten minutes, get with your team for a minute, talk about what you saw, play again. Ask after the makes and after the misses, because a make can be the wrong choice and a miss can be the right one. When a kid hits a tough one, Rob’s answer is a good one: “Let’s try and get an easier one.”

This is how we coach decision making. The coach sets the problem. The players solve it. The debrief separates the decision from the outcome, and the next possession gets a little smarter.

$We were so blessed by Professor, Adrian Bejan, a Physics professor at Duke University, who created the Constructal Law. Where he allowed us to listen in on his lecture about Locomotion in animals and the different domains of space. He was incredibly smart and knowledgeable about almost any topic! We enjoyed long conversations about fractals, Homo Sapiens, and different kinds of government organizations! He also allowed my dad @7mary4_ponch to lecture to his class about what he learned from the military and share his equation on maneuverability in aircraft’s! It was a great day, and hope to talk to him again soon!! - - - - - #physics #constructallaw #nature #adrianbejan$
