Second Skin : A Portrait Series

Second Skin is a body of work that explores the interpretation of self. A small insight into the inner workings and a playful experiment in how each individual inwardly and outwardly presents.

With all the turmoil going on in the world right now, AI advancements and the slog of winter, it felt like the perfect time to create just for the sake of creating. And to do so in a tactile, handmade, flaws and all, way.

So, I asked 20 wonderfully creative friends to come to the studio, hang out and let me photograph them across two different sets up, four times.

The paper roll set up, I wanted something clinical, captured almost like it was a passport photo displayed as a diptyph of their first and second skin, side by side. Leaning into the awkwardness and tension that normally gets coached out of subjects on shoots, I wanted to keep that rawness in. Then I captured everyone in more of a conversational way, leaning more into their personality.

The brief was loose, with words like playfulness, curiosity, quirky, driving the narrative as I asked everyone to show their self ego, self image, quiet or loud self, caricature of art self, however the subject interpreted it and themselves on that day.

My approach as a creative is centred around collaboration and I loved that I had absolutely no idea where their experiment would land. Provide a loose brief, cheese, wine, crafts and hope for the best.

This is the first seven portraits in a series of 20 and I’m so grateful for everyone involved. For their trust and for just getting weird, getting crafty and lifting the lid on their inner monologue.

Special shout out to Jade, my right hand who made the day run smoothly and for the BTS vid. Leslie for putting together the typography and burning her hair for the sake of art, and to Justine who’s been the sounding board on this idea for way too long.

Here’s to making more handmade, community focused art just for the sake of it. xx
