What a great day it was yesterday! Thanks so much to everyone who braved the rain to come down and support us. Great to meet many of you who contributed to the open call, the variety of different perspectives of the cooling towers was fantastic to see.

Lots of conversations were had about the significance of these impressive structures, and what they mean to people. Thanks to everyone who scanned the QR code to learn about the @c20society campaign to protect cooling towers. If it was a bit too wet and windy for you to manage that yesterday, please visit c20society.org.uk/cooling-towers or follow the link in my bio to learn more and sign the petition.

Special thanks to @lensfayre for hosting us, @doyouneedacoffee for keeping us fuelled, @ryangjheath_ for his spectacular cooling tower incense burner display and @an_orrdinary_journey for these excellent pictures.

Megawatt Valley newspapers will be available to purchase online soon, bear with us! I will post an update here when they’re ready to go.

A sample copy of the Megawatt Valley newspaper arrived this afternoon from @newspaperclub! A few minor tweaks I need to make before printing the full run, but I’m very pleased with how it’s looking.

Sneak peek of the opening spread here featuring @calmanalogue’s golden hour Ratcliffe-on-Soar and @chrismatthews82’s brilliant introductory text 👀

Hope to see you at the launch day: 29th August, @lensfayre 11am - 4pm 🏭 ⚡️

Sound the klaxon — this is an all stations announcement from the control room! 📢🏭

My friend Cal McNab (@calmanalogue) and I are collaborating on a new photo newspaper bringing together our photographs documenting the architecture and infrastructure of power generation in Nottinghamshire. Megawatt Valley is the name given to the stretch of the River Trent that once hosted one of the highest concentrations of power stations in Europe. At its peak, the region generated up to a quarter of the power demand for England and Wales. Our photographs focus on two of its former giants: West Burton, soon to be the site of Britain’s first prototype nuclear fusion reactor, and Ratcliffe-on-Soar, the UK’s last coal-fired power station, which closed in 2024.

We’re thrilled to have a brilliant introduction written by architectural historian Chris Matthews (@chrismatthews82), who makes the case for Ratcliffe’s design pedigree and explores the hinterland it dominates.

To celebrate the publication of the newspaper, we’re holding a launch day on Saturday 29th August, hosted by our friends at LensFayre (@lensfayre). We’ll have copies of the newspaper hot off the press, a display of cooling tower incense burners by artist Ryan Heath (@ryangjheath_) — arranged to mirror the formation of Ratcliffe-on-Soar’s own towers! — a record player spinning power station sounds, and fresh coffee brewed up by Brother Coffee (@doyouneedacoffee). The windows of LensFayre will also be given over to an open call exhibition of Ratcliffe-on-Soar photographs — more details on that soon!

Chris Matthews (@chrismatthews82) will be joining us for part of the day to talk about the Twentieth Century Society’s (@c20society) campaign to save cooling towers, and we’ll have some very cool “Towers of Power” stickers to take away to show your support.

Finally, if you’re interested in analogue photography, it’s a great chance to chat to the LensFayre team about all things film and cameras.

Drop by anytime between 11am–4pm!

Please share this post and spread the word to friends and family. We’d really appreciate any help getting the word out.
