Housemates, today we’re ‘At Home With’ an artist who’s been on my radar since 2020 and has been on a run of releases lately that I genuinely can’t stop talking about - @renforshort.

I first found renforshort around the release of her ‘teenage angst EP’ and have been a fan ever since. That said, her newest singles have been some of my absolute favorites from her to date. “Kingpin” has been in heavy rotation since it dropped and so has “Annie Get Your Gun.” If you haven’t heard either of those yet, stop what you’re doing immediately and go listen.

renforshort is from Toronto, and while her earlier music leaned into an alternative pop space, you can really feel the DNA of the Toronto rock and alternative scene coming through in these new songs. That’s one of my favorite music scenes period, so this direction hits differently for me. That influence was already starting to show in past EP’s like ‘a girl’s experience’ and ‘clean hands dirty water’ - songs like “hate the way you love me,” “made for you,” and “serpentine” were all strong indicators of where she was heading - but where those felt like glimpses, the new music feels like a full arrival. It’s a natural maturation of her sound and it suits her really well.

What keeps pulling me back in is the songwriting. The songs are intimate and personal while somehow still managing to be wildly catchy and commercial. The production is dialed in too, from the tones to the sound choices to the arrangements. Every time a song ends I’m either hitting repeat or finding myself an hour deep in a rabbit hole of renforshort’s catalog. Both outcomes are great honestly.

If you’re a fan of beabadoobee, Remi Wolf, hemlocke springs, or daine, I think you’ll find a lot to love in renforshort.
