Walkie-Talkie revisits spaces after time has passed. Eighteen months on, a relatively short span, what remains when returning to photographs and field recordings? Can we recover how we felt, the impressions that settled on us? What words surface, and how do they arrange themselves?
The piece combines cymbals, two walkie-talkies (one partially broken), and a radio. The voice was recorded in February 2026 during an automatic writing session, prompted by photographs and field recordings from the original trip.
The work originates from a solo recording session in a loft in Aulus-les-Bains at @camp_fr , immediately following the Environment and Synthesis workshop in Autumn 2024, hosted by Mark Fell.
.
Presented on @radiophreniaglasgow Sept 2026.

I have just returned from Aulus, a secluded village deep in the French Pyrenees, where I spent several days on a field recording residency.

I came back with a mind full of sounds after days of listening, experimenting and recording in a landscape that felt made for it. I had the chance to try different microphones, explore how soundscapes changed with increasing altitude, record a flowering bush alive with buzzing bumblebees, capture the squeaks and creaks of the house, and hear a suspended bridge resonate with long trails and harmonies through a geophone.

Huge thanks to Kate Carr @k8_carr_ and Diane Hope @inthesoundfield for sharing their knowledge, experience and approaches to sound and for opening up so many new ways of thinking about field recording and listening practice.

We also had a fascinating talk from Chris Watson, who shared his field recording experience, practice and compositions with us in a very warm and human way, and I particularly enjoyed our little enthusiastic chat about tape loops and Nagra recorders.

I came home with a recorder full of sounds to revisit, but also with valuable new connections with the deeply inspiring people I met in Aulus. I could not have wished for a warmer, more curious and adventurous group of people to share the experience with.

I feel extremely grateful 🙏 for all the time, chats, sounds and connections that came my way in Aulus. Those are the little big things that I value the most ♥️

Last month, I spent time on the other side of the world in Aulus-les-Bains, France, on a music residency at @camp_fr 💕 Our cohort was blessed to be mentored by the absolutely mind blowing Loraine James @setfiretoloraine to learn about live performance :,)

We swam in waterfalls, took field recordings, walked in the mountains, spent time experimenting with sounds, discovered new music together and chased dogs around the beautiful residency lol 🥹🫶 Aulus-Les-Bains has a fascinating history, where syphilis patients used to visit the thermal baths in the hopes that the healing waters and natural beauty would cure their syphilis….. And women used to hike up the mountains to collect large lumps of ice, to give to their husbands to sell in the village lol

While completely delirious from jet lag loool, so so grateful to have been able to learn from the phenomenal and incredibly generous Loraine, and from all of our lovely, inspiring cohort, @polonakasal @insolvnsea @louismorgan.wav @san_huan_ @falloverfourleafclovers @thisiskatelim @mozemusic_ @kevin_frieden @silvergrn @bronamartin @stillunknowndelma @zoozamusic @__jsq__ @louisemarieelizabe @stelloid + Klaus!! :,)
❤️😭 j’adore and miss you all ~ thank you for such a special time. I love learning together. Endless blessings and swag!!!!! xx

CAMP Online Residency – A Concrete Approach to a Music to Come with Kassel Jaeger – BEAN associate grant

€159.50 with BEAN 50% off | Online | Deadline: 12 October 2026

Developed from Francois’s sold out series’ in 2024/25, this online workshop is a unique opportunity to explore the ideas, history and forward trajectories of musique concrete, led by composer, writer, theoretician and Director of INA GRM, Francois J. Bonnet (aka Kassel Jaeger).

Drawing on the heritage of musique concrete and acousmatic music, this course aims to revise the conceptual foundations that traditionally underpin musical thinking and to take a more experiential approach to composition. Drawing on an original body of theory as well as tangible examples, the aim of the session is to open up new paths of creation, enabling each participant to articulate their relationship to musical creation more clearly, to redefine the issues at stake and to find new creative routes to explore.

BEAN members can apply for a 50% discount by applying for the Open Grant by mentioning that they are a member when applying – there are only a few places remaining!

Jlin returns to @camp_fr from September 21-25 for an exclusive online workshop! Over five videocall sessions, participants will take an epic inward journey of understanding creative processes and modes of expression for a carefully constructed examination of the power of self-exploration in composition.

“This intimate composition course delves into the process of using personal experiences and self-awareness as inspiration for music creation. It emphasizes the significance of understanding oneself and the emotional connections that can fuel creativity. Through self-reflection techniques like meditation, journaling, and dream interpretation, artists can explore their emotions, memories, and vulnerabilities to translate them into authentic sonic forms.” - @jlin_p
