When a Farm Becomes a Living Lab 🌱

We are proud to announce the launch of the Finca Escuela project — our Learning Farm in the Panama Canal watershed, where the land itself becomes the teacher.
Finca Escuela is part of a wider initiative: The Restoration Lab, whose mission is to restore land, water, and livelihoods through hands-on restoration trials and applied research.

At Finca Escuela, farmers and researchers work together to understand how regenerative agriculture can restore soil health, protect water, increase biodiversity, and build resilience to climate change.
This is a place to learn by doing — where community knowledge and scientific research meet directly on the land.
Finca Escuela is more than a project:
It is a living example of how restoration can:

🤞 strengthen communities
🧍 support local livelihoods
🦚 and heal ecosystems from the ground up.

We are learning directly from the land — and we are honored to share this journey with Panama and the world. 🌍💚

🌿🔥 Pyro-Therapy Gathering: Event Review
💚 Healing with Fire through Community Events
✨ Healing our sense of place
💔 Making space for grief
🌍 Remembering our connection🌱

I recently had the opportunity to attend a Community Pyro-Therapy Event.

Attending the gathering was a truly moving and unforgettable experience. 🌎
It was informative and inspiring, like all the events these folks put on. It was a great way to meet other community members and learn about fire, the land, and ourselves.

We came together in a space shaped by fire and renewal—a space where grief and growth, loss and life, can coexist side by side. We were reminded that fire, while devastating, also clears the way for new growth, fresh beginnings, and new life. In honoring the scars on the land, we can find permission to celebrate the scars within ourselves.

Throughout the day, we were invited to slow down, be fully present, and practice deep listening—to the earth, to our own bodies, and to each other. Healing wasn’t rushed or forced. It was about allowing, witnessing, and belonging again to the world around us.

Events like these can help us see that the Earth grieves and heals with us. The scent of charred wood, the whisper of the wind through blackened trees, the tender green shoots pushing through ash—all become sacred reminders: ✨ Beauty still rises. We still rise. ✨ No matter what we carry into the forest—grief, hope, fear, gratitude, or a mixture of all—we find ourselves welcomed, held, and supported by the land and one another.

Through the practice of pyro-therapy, we can reconnect not only with landscapes touched by wildfire but also with the parts of ourselves shaped by personal loss and transformation.

This Pyro-Therapy Gathering was a profound experience of remembrance, resilience, and hope.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to step into this healing space and to share in such a powerful collective journey. 🌿🔥

Special Thanks to Blake Ellis!

Split wood in Paradise biochar cook off at Nobel park. @butteenvironmentalcouncil @biocharonsite @campfire.restorationproject following wild fire stands of dead trees were cut down into rounds for 3 years. no one claimed the locust fire wood and the pine wood became light and full of termites. We split the rounds into piles covered by tarps through the rains. Once the kiln was up to temperature we add the wood around the kiln careful to not suppress the flame, feeding wood where ash develops. As the layers are covered in flames more split wood is continually added attempting to allow space between each piece for effectively burning the pile which became heaping above the kiln walls engulfed with flames consuming a majority of smoke. Allowing the fire to burn without adding more wood, biochar forms shrinking the wood settling into the kiln. More wood could have been added and continued to burn into the night filling the kiln. However to keep our demonstration event on schedule we began quenching. Sorting through the biochar using pitchfork, rake, and shovel finding incomplete burning pieces. Where the water has put out a flame on a piece of wood not yet done burning it’s emitting smoke has a blue hue that is distinguished from the white steam around the biochar pile. Those pieces are set or tossed aside into a pile within a few kiln panels allowing them to redevelop into flame and burn further as we continue raking out and quenching the #biochar once most the heat had been released, #nutrients #microbes @chi_microbes were added to the #water inoculating the biochar while continuing to #quench until all #steam has stopped forming. The remaining incomplete burned pieces are also quenched separately and spread out on top of a kiln panel to prevent reigniting. The biochar pile is raked out wide and thin to encourage vegetation to grow through and cover it. It has been a pleasure to continue our workshop demonstration series in #paradise #splitwood #carbon #sequestration #carbonsequestration #ecoresponsable #ecorestoration #fire #firesafe #soil #soilhealth #firerestoration #ringoffirebiocharkiln
