Science-backed strategies to create a resilient dog

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Just wrapped three days filming with Dr. Melanie Uhde (@caninedecoded), and I’m walking away very impressed!

Most anxiety advice out there is guesswork.

Melanie actually breaks down what’s happening in the dog’s brain and what to do about it, backed by real science.

Watching her work with these dogs over the last three days, I’m convinced this is the best course out there on properly dealing with anxiety in dogs!

Coming soon to @sitstaylearn

If you’ve got an anxious dog or you are a dog trainer, this one’s for you.

Coming soon! 🤯

What a week. ❤️

One of my favorite moments this week was getting to thank Dr. Roger Abrantes in person. I also got to know so many more incredible people this year, which made the conference even more special.

One of my favorite things Dr. Abrantes said was:
“Variation is what propels evolution.”

That one stuck with me.
This industry has a lot of different trainers, different experiences, different ideas, and different ways of doing things.

We are not always going to agree.
But I do think we should be able to learn from each other, challenge each other, ask better questions, and keep growing.

That’s a huge part of what I love about conference.

I got to learn from some of my favorite people, spend time with friends and mentors, meet so many more incredible people, laugh a lot, somehow become a referee 😂 and experience conference for the first time from the other side, helping host it for everyone else.

I’ve gotten so much from the IACP over the years, and I’m excited to be on the Board and help create that experience for other trainers coming in behind us.

Great week. Great people.

And a lot to build on. 💙

Thank you to the IACP for an amazing event. The best one yet.

Thank you to the amazing board: Jason Pergason, Lesley Caven, Antonio Diaz, Marlene Ruiz, Matt Covey, Magdalena Szymanska, Rachel Yates, Emily Shekleton and anyone I may have missed.

Thanks to the attendees who made the event the memorable experience it was. Simply Amazing !!!

The awesome speakers… all of them, in particular the presentations I caught:
Jamie Penrith
Roberto Barata
Clive Wynne
Melanie Uhde
Heather Beck

If you love dogs and work with them in most any capacity, consider joining this amazing organization. All schools of training are welcome…. All people are welcomed without judgement. Tell them I sent you!!!

PS. The security guard at the end is ai enhanced. I was totally not in need of any security despite public concerns.

BUILDING RESILIENCE IN DOGS 🐾

Are we actually teaching dogs how to cope — or are we becoming too quick to remove every uncomfortable feeling, distract them away from frustration, or manage the outward behaviour?

Resilience is not about forcing dogs through overwhelming situations.

It is about progressively teaching them how to experience manageable frustration, uncertainty, excitement and environmental pressure — and recover appropriately.

Sometimes the answer is simply:

“Not right now.”

You don’t get to greet that dog.

You don’t get the toy immediately.

You need to wait before getting out of the vehicle.

You need to disengage, settle and regulate.

That isn’t automatically poor welfare.

Those moments can be opportunities to develop frustration tolerance, impulse control, emotional regulation and real-world coping skills.

In our latest Doggo’s Off Leash blog, we look at:

🐕 Resilience vs avoidance
🐕 Behavioural thresholds
🐕 Productive challenge vs overwhelming stress
🐕 Why predictability and controllability matter
🐕 Pain and physical health in behaviour cases
🐕 Why behaviour is information
🐕 The increasing conversation around behavioural medication
🐕 Why reducing visible behaviour is not necessarily the same as teaching a new skill
🐕 Structure, boundaries and the word “no”
🐕 Why socialisation does not mean greeting every dog
🐕 Building dogs capable of functioning in the real world

The article also includes research and further reading, including work from Michael Ellis, Dr Melanie Uhde and peer-reviewed canine behaviour literature.

Our goal should not be dogs that can only function when every part of their environment is controlled around them.

Our goal should be dogs that, within their individual capabilities, can experience manageable challenges, adapt, recover, learn and move forward.

Going through my photos (full memory, iykyk) and reminiscing on the @hdsearchdogfund training earlier this year. Such a phenomenal opportunity for teams to prepare and learn! Super grateful for the experience and for the awesome people I get to train with ✨ and proud of Shady for working hard on new rubble with new challenges 💫

Announcement-Cali Dog Folks!

Mackenzie and I recently moved to Southern California in the Costa Mesa/Newport Beach area. I will still be doing my usual traveling circuit and workshops all around. But now that I am no longer based in the East I am looking to start working with ring sport dogs/handlers out here around the West Coast on a regular basis any time that I’m not on the road! I am not a “my way or the highway” type of decoy, and obviously it’s most important to work the dog in front of you as we all know—so if you already have a training program/director, but want a new person in the suit to duplicate/imitate, or generalize what you’ve built , I’m more than happy to do so. On the other hand I’m also willing to implement my game-plan if you are needing a direction to go. I’m hoping to stay focused on my current passion which is Mondioring, French Ring and personal protection teams but I’m definitely open to working any protection dogs(PSA, IGP etc.) We are lucky enough to have our own training field here where I will be working out of but if you are local enough I’m happy to make day trips around SoCal for the right situation! Any age, any breed let’s train, have some fun, and see where it takes us! Please send me a private message for questions, rates, and scheduling! I am very excited to hear from all of you and look forward to exploring this new chapter and these new opportunities! -Tony Sagstetter

The Anti-Marketing Paradox

My last project in Brazil reached over 4K followers on Instagram and another 4K subscribers on YouTube. I was consistent, and I learned so much through the process.

A big shoutout to @officialthinkmedia — your free content helped me reach those results. That’s what true authority looks like.

Applying their framework to dog training brought me to a fascinating realization: when we study behavior, we learn about reinforcement. A dog might perform a command just to get a ball, the same way someone might work just for the money.

But let me ask you: Do you wake up every morning just for the paycheck, or for the pleasure of doing your absolute best?

Through this journey, I became just like the dogs of world-class champions. Those dogs don’t just train for the food or the ball; they genuinely love the activity and the bond with their handler.

The goal is to have a dog that loves the game itself—a dog that learns behaviors through play, rather than just being hyper-fixated on a toy or food. The material reward is just a tool; the real drive is our connection.

I owe my deepest perspective on this to @trainlikeivan and @caninedecoded (Melanie Uhde). Their work completely shifted how I perceive dogs and behavior, showing that true training is about a shared state of mind.

In the most challenging dog sports in the world, the judges don't just look at whether a dog obeys. They judge the enthusiasm during the execution. That performance tells the story of the training: What emotions are involved? How do they reflect the highest possible level of animal welfare?

That is why here at Bushido, you don’t pay me anything. I train your dog for free. Well, almost for free. (The real cost? You’ll have to do the work, read the books, and watch the seminars I assign you).

I know you just want your dog to sit. But take a deep breath and join me on a much deeper journey. This path has no end. Your first homework? Check the comments below and follow the experts I’ve mentioned there.
