Science-backed strategies to create a resilient dog
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Primary frustration: An expected reward unexpectedly omitted or reduced, producing an aversive response. We can leverage frustration to create momentum and motivation. So it’s not something to be avoided at all times!

Secondary frustration: Through classical conditioning, cues previously associated with frustrative nonreward acquire the ability to elicit a conditioned frustration response.

A dog might have to learn to work through frustration while learning behaviors without developing habitual frustration-related behaviors. Vocalizing is probably the most common one…

One of the early sessions for Ollie’s arousal management on the slat mill. Still some work to do… managing arousal has a lot do with realizing that you have some agency over the thing and your body. It’s also part of a bigger project I’m working on with a friend. Im gonna keep it a bit of a secret for now but the wait will be worth it.

Let’s just say it’s going to be the most comprehensive thing out there on k9 movement when it comes to preparing, conditioning, monitoring, executing, and excelling in running and even biking with your dog… including arousal and anxiety management, anatomy, relaxation, inside/outside setup, equipment and soooooo much more.

Stay tuned…

There isn’t good data on what type of exercise, duration, intensity has anxiolytic effects in dogs. Different dogs might respond differently. But we gotta start somewhere to find better reproducible answers beyond “a hunch”.

Stay tuned and follow along. In November I’m going to launch the first movement pilot program with 4-5 selected anxious dogs and defined behavioral testing to examine how certain exercises affect anxiety like symptoms in dogs. by @caninedecoded

Some researchers are equally annoyed with the badly defined concept of “good stress” and even advocate to not use it anymore at all… and just call it stress. 🤷🏻‍♀️ by @caninedecoded

I know it’s getting cooler in many areas but it doesn’t have to be hot for your dog to overheat. Core body temperature continues to rise for up to 15 minutes even after the exercise has ended.

It’s different for every dog but it’s worth keeping an eye on him or her. by @caninedecoded

Ollie is showing off his muscles with the ipsilateral step up hold.

If you’re working on this, avoid a rounded, crooked, or twisted topline. If the dog can’t hold the position with a straight spine, it’s too difficult. by @caninedecoded

The role of testosterone in aggression seems an important topic since it infiltrates an arena where neutering male dogs is still considered a solution to unwanted aggression… by @caninedecoded

First, Im freaking loving this cabin in the woods!

Second, we all can benefit from more education, more critical thinking, more common sense… I mean is there ever too much of any of that?

Third, I share educational content and I share my own training approach and… what you do with that is up to you. But it’s here if you find it useful!

Let’s be all useful for each other! by @caninedecoded

It’s worth mentioning that nociception isn’t just about detecting actual damage but also the threat of damage, eg increasing pressure.

So the resulting interpretation of that threat can be considered pain. Some of you might say that the ecollar levels used don’t inflict pain if used correctly… which is a difficult statement to make given that pain is not just subjective but difficult to read in an animal that can’t verbally confirm it. For the sake of this post, pain and discomfort that causes a change of behavior activate similar pain pathways.

But again, pain perception isn’t always dramatic or a threat to welfare either. And it shouldn’t be pinned on tools.

Complex topic… by @caninedecoded

The shoulder and forelimb stay attached to the spine and rest of the body by a sling of muscles and tendons only. Unlike the hip with its ball socket joint, it’s on those muscles to ensure flexibility and stability at the same time.

That’s a huge task. Overloading the tendons too fast with too many jumps, fast runs and turns, leads to the common tendinopathies.

This pushup exercise is a good way to add load by elevating the hindlegs and later make the front leg surface wobbly. by @caninedecoded

You’re dealt certain cards but how you play is up to you.

Maybe we blame genetics too fast for behaviors that we let the dog rehearse for too long. by @caninedecoded
