@canopystudio Community Farewell Show 📝

Show 1 • Act 2 • Generations of Teachers

What a conceptual way to demonstrate the generational legacy of Canopy in the world of aerial and circus arts! Each pair of performers represented a teacher instructing a student, and that student becoming the next performer’s teacher. The act represented so much of what Canopy is about: not only being a space for activity and learning new physical feats, but simultaneously nourishing a sense of community and care within every person who passes through its doors.

One of the most impressive, fun, & creatively challenging senior sessions I’ve photographed. 😍 Shout out to @canopystudio for helping make this happen, for the Fabrics lessons that Lane has fallen in love with over the past 2 years, & for all the good you do for the Athens community & beyond. 🙌

🫶🏾🦾This one has a pretty cool connection behind it.
MJ is an instructor at @canopystudio Studio, a place that has held a special place in our family for a long time. Megan has been a part of the Canopy community since we first started dating, so it’s been woven into our lives for years.
And this past summer, things came full circle in a pretty cool way when MJ had the opportunity to coach Camden in trapeze at summer camp for the first time.
Now I get to return the favor and coach her.

MJ officially has her first session in the books and is now officially a member of the first 50 here at Team Williams Training, and I’m excited to help her build her strength and see where this journey takes her.

Funny how these relationships come full circle.
First session in the books. Just getting started. 🫶🏾🦾

Yesterday, hundreds of people walked through our doors to celebrate a new chapter for ACCA, and we were absolutely blown away by the excitement, support, and love.

To our clients and participants, staff, volunteers, board members, sponsors, community partners, friends, and everyone who joined us yesterday: thank you. And to everyone who has been part of ACCA’s story over nearly 60 years, thank you for helping us get here.

The Center at ACCA may be a new name, but it’s built on decades of people showing up for one another and a belief that aging can be full of possibility, connection, purpose, and joy.

Here’s to everything we’ve built together and everything still to come.

HAPPY HEARTED / OLD PINE - choreographed for the Canopy FAREWELL (To Tracy Street) Show, September 2026 by April Skelton featuring aerialists: Ari Bastow, Stephanie Crouch, Johanna Nicol, LeeAnn Peppers, Shannon Romano, April Skelton, and Carly Wyrick

A note from April about the work… “The lyrics in this song paint a picture of summer camp: enduring friendships created around a shared experience of place. The whimsy, warm nostalgia, sense of play, and cyclical structure and references express many of my feelings around this moment: that being part of Canopy’s community is a shared deed to a place, yes, but also a story. We see our experiences written in the rings of the tree that is felled, but ground ourselves in the knowing that the forest is ever-growing, all around us. In this act, I wanted to create movements that spread and stretched to fill this beautiful space with the joy and connection that it has brought forth for so long. I am honored and delighted to have dancers in this act whom I first taught over 15 years ago, and as recently as this spring. The circle is always open.”

Fall continues with 4️⃣ dedicated reading hours with Silent Book Club Athens and a Mahjong 🀄️ class! We’ll be at our three monthly reading venues @tappedathens, @foxgloveplantbar, and @globeathens — ⏰ note the new time for Globe. We are also reading at @canopystudio! Canopy is hosting their own reading hour so things may vary a bit from our usual format. Our Mahjong night is led by @greenginkgomahjong and we are so excited to learn!

⚠️ Space is limited for our events, so please reserve your seat to attend. Mahjong also requires advance payment to secure a seat.

➡️ Swipe for book club details, and visit us on EventBrite to learn more about each regular reading event including times and food options.

We are so glad you can dedicate a little time in your day to read, and we look forward to seeing you. Happy reading 😍

Last night’s Open Mic night @canopystudio was fun and awesome!!!🔥🔥🔥 I took my friend, 96 year old ATL acrobat, Mr. Steve to perform our act at Canopy. This was my gift to him. Every year he always talks about wanting to perform especially on his birthday. This was a great idea for us to do our act four days before his birthday! 😀🙏🏾 #oldestacrobat #atlantaacrobats #athensbynight #athensacrobats

@canopystudio Community Farewell Show 🌺

Show 1 • Act 1 • We Were Born to Fly

The magic of Disney's "Moana" came to life during this piece! This was the first time I got to see some of the younger Canopy students perform. Their confidence not just onstage but on, you know, various apparatuses dangling from Very High Ceilings, is awe-inspiring. The coolest part about this piece was that there were several aerial performance styles put together, making it a medley not just of music selections, but of the circus arts as well.

Proud to share a clip of my Dance Trapeze Choreography class’s performance at the Farewell (to Tracy Street) Show on Saturday at @canopystudio . I love teaching this group and love how they have shown up so consistently for one another. Something particularly gratifying for me in the creation of this work was the patience and commitment of the dancers. It seems more difficult than it used to be to find students who are interested in the long process of act creation from idea to full realization. These dancers have been working with me on the act since April and it’s been a joy to do. Here are some words about the concept for this act:

The lyrics in this song paint a picture of summer camp: enduring friendships created around a shared experience of place. I am honored and delighted to have dancers in this act whom I first taught over 15 years ago, and as recently as this spring, in collaboration with both new and veteran Repertory Company members. The circle is always open. -April
