Shuffling 🥁

One of my favorite parts of tracking and engineering myself is chasing tones. Figuring out how to take what a producer is hearing in their head and actually capture it coming out of the speakers.

This was from a 5-song country EP, and sometimes the sound the song needs isn’t a massive drum room or a huge kit. Sometimes it’s a snare, a pair of brushes, the right mic placement and a little intention.

I love working in big studios. Always will.

But I also really love seeing how far I can push my own space and proving you don’t need a multi-million dollar room to make something feel right.

The tone quest might honestly be my favorite part of the job.

Bought 8 Wolff Audio W-1 mic preamps, and they arrived today. Eight is enough?

The in between songs 🥁👀

When I’ve sent off a session and I’m waiting for approval from the producer or waiting on the next set of files to come in I’ll usually just fiddle around on the kit.

Maybe I’ll try a new mic technique, test out some new plugins in my template, or sometimes just groove and get weird.

It’s my way of staying in the tracking zone. Keeping the ears on, the hands moving, and the creative flow going until the next song hits my inbox.

Sometimes the in between is where you stumble into something cool.

On this one I tried something new on the knee mic channel and I got this new hand drum that I made a loop with.

Almost through my back out for that fill 🔥

Came across this snare tone for a Neo soul project. 70’s Supra with a piece of paper taped to it, a @toonetowels folded on top, and a stereo cloud lifter on the towel for the hell of it. Turned out pretty sick.

Gush for days 🥁

I’ve worked really hard over the last 5–6 years to NOT be known for just one sound.

Having a vibe is cool. Being a one-trick pony isn’t.

I want to be just as comfortable playing something soft and vibey as I am absolutely beating the brakes off a kit.

Country. Pop. Rock. Indie. Worship. Whatever.

The goal has always been simple:

Become a lethal threat in the studio, no matter what kind of song walks through the door. 🫡🥁

Drummers/producers. What’s one genre you feel completely at home in… and one you want to get better at?

The gear tower needs to be restructured before it falls on my head. Especially when there are a couple @audioscapeaudio pieces coming to join the party 👀 #studio #gear #analoggear #mixrack
