POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In celebration of the arts, particularly photography, we reflect on a remarkable event held this time last year, where Your Luxury Africa and Private Clients by Old Mutual Wealth came together to create a memorable evening in the heart of Johannesburg’s Rosebank. Hosted at Mesh Members Club, the event centred around photography’s role in shaping South African history and celebrating the success of the Stellenbosch Outdoor Photography exhibition entitled I Dream Up for Myself and Others curated by Anelisa Mangcu.

The evening featured insightful talks from notable figures including Ntokozo Maseko, former editor-in-chief of Your Luxury Africa, who discussed photography’s impact on modern storytelling. Ruth Seopedi Motau, a distinguished photographic artist, shared her perspective on the power of images to preserve culture and address social issues. Anelisa Mangcu, curator of the Stellenbosch Outdoor Photography Exhibition and founder of Under the Aegis, explored how photography documents and shapes South African identity. Karabo Morule, founder of Capital Art, highlighted the intersection of contemporary photography and art in bridging past and present.

The outdoor photography exhibition Freedom, I Dream Up for Myself and Others celebrated at the Mesh members club in Johannesburg was a powerful and timely decision for several reasons. Johannesburg, as South Africa’s economic and cultural hub, has long been a place where history, identity, and social change converge. The city’s rich historical context—shaped by apartheid, the struggle for liberation, and ongoing conversations about transformation—provided us grounds to open up dialogues about freedom, identity, and the role of photography in documenting these themes.

Thank you to @keke_matlou for the invitation this Pride Month to be an ally 🏳️‍🌈and share my tips as an ultimate guide to collecting art for value and advocating for collection management on behalf of @capitalartofficial at the Let’s Talk Wine & Art event held at @bkhz, and to support @rainbowdrivesa!

It was also great to learn more about the practice of Mercy Thokozane Minah (@iamafreedom) whose works and progress I will now follow avidly! And in general to connect with others on the two subjects, including @mankebeseakgoe and @kwanele_kunene and share with others insights about the art ecosystem in South Africa.

@rainbowdrivesa is a non-profit led by 🏳️‍🌈women which offers a range of educational, informative and resource-sharing services to women and children, including mentorship, therapy services, wellness workshops and fundraising drives to make underwear, sanitary and hygiene products accessible to girls in marginalised and disempowered communities.

Following a welcome address from FNB Art Joburg’s founding director, Mandla Sibeko and BMW’s Marcelle, members were invited to listen to a panel discussion between iToo Artinsure, Strauss & Co and Capital Art. The conversation was moderated by BMW Young Collectors Co. member and founder of Capital Art, Karabo Morule. During the panel, which developed into an open dialogue with the club’s members, panelists answered questions related to the roles that players like insurers, auctioneers and collection managers play, parallel to collectors, in sustaining the art ecosystem.

A collaboration between BMW and FNB Art Joburg, the BMW Young Collectors Co. was established to support South Africa's art market by cultivating a patronage that would grow the support system artists have.

Following the panel discussions, Strauss & Co. hosted a mock auction where members took up the opportunity to learn and practice how auctions work by placing bids on works by South African masters like Gerard Sekoto and Irma Stern. This serves as testament to BMW Young Collectors Co.’s mandate to foster insight through experiential learning.

In July 2023, our outdoor photography exhibition, entitled ‘Freedom, I dream up for myself and others’, opened publicly. Eight large-scale works by eight masters of photography who are inspired by the African continent were exhibited across the historic town for the next 10 months.

The Stellenbosch Outdoor Photography Exhibition was presented by the Stellenbosch Triennale and proud patron Private Clients by Old Mutual Wealth. Curated by @___undertheaegis and @AnelisaMangcu. The aim was to explore the medium of photography through the lenses of some of the very best.

We were very happy to receive welcome media recognition from the following respected platforms:
