For anyone still struggling with consent, we tried protein shakes.

Dean tried the shake.

He didn’t really want it, but he tried it.

I offered it again.

He said no.

I kept asking.

Still no.

I even brought Sarah into it with a strawberry shake.

Still no.

At no point did Dean trying the shake once mean I had permission to keep giving it to him.

His first reluctant yes didn’t cancel out his later no.

My wanting him to have it didn’t matter.

Sarah having a different flavor didn’t matter.

Someone else thinking he’d enjoy it didn’t matter.

How many protein shakes he’d had before wouldn’t matter either.

He didn’t want the bloody shake.

Consent can be enthusiastic.
It can be withdrawn.
You can change your mind.
You can say yes to one thing and no to another.
You can say yes to one person and no to their friend.

A previous yes is not a current yes.

If someone becomes too intoxicated, asleep or otherwise unable to participate in that decision, that isn’t an opportunity to keep going.

It is a reason to stop.

We seem to understand this perfectly well when it’s a protein shake.

So perhaps consent was never actually the complicated part.

We finished building the floor ring! We’ve been practicing on a mat for 8 months, so much thanks to be given to our friends @fightsyndicate_bigbear, my brother Coach Red and brother Pete Carey @capoboxinggym and my good friend Coach Carlos @thelordsring and my dear friend Shane Swartz, my brother @swartzboxingfitness for helping us with this non profit program for Big Bear. Guys that give, change the world. Thank you brothers!

Ten weeks. Three rounds. One question answered.

Back in March I stepped into a boxing ring for the first time since 1999, aged 22. I wanted to do it before I turned 50, and I wanted it to mean something.

I’ve only been able to share these images now. My opponent was still serving in US Special Operations, and his anonymity mattered more than my content ever will.

So let me start with him.

It takes very little to talk about stepping into a ring. It takes something else entirely to actually do it. He had nothing to gain and everything to lose, reputation, the quiet dignity of a man who doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone. He did it anyway, for the same reason I did and to raise funds for @bigskybravery , who provide all-expense-paid post-deployment decompression for active-duty SOF, and support their spouses, families and alumni.

That evening they raised a staggering $2.1 million. That’s the number that makes the ten weeks worth it. Every dollar goes to men and women coming off deployment who need somewhere to land.

Boxing is the best lie detector in sport. There’s no team to carry you, no ball to pass, nowhere to hide. Whatever you’ve done in your training regime walks into that ring with you, and whatever you skipped walks in too. The ropes go up and you find out exactly what you are.

Getting to the start line took a team. My wife @alanastott ran my nutrition and got 13lbs off me without breaking me. @capoboxinggym and their staff put the skills back in. @medlounge_co @hypoxico @thehyperbarics and @therabody kept a 49-year-old body recovering like a younger one. @skullcandy provided the soundtrack for every early morning.

But the part that stayed with me is this. When it gets hard, who is in your corner?

For me it’s always been the same answer. Alana was my cornerman. My daughter @molliestottt was my cutman. And through the noise of an entire room, I could hear her screaming louder than anyone in there.

That’s what I was fighting for. That’s what got me through the third round.

I said I’d do it before I turn 50. Nobody said anything about after.
