Huge thanks to the parents who pitched in loading gear, selling raffle tickets, and everything else!

Girls don’t just belong in skateboarding. They helped build it.

Today, October 11, is International Day of the Girl, a day to celebrate the power, potential, and achievements of girls around the world.

Established by the United Nations in 2011 and first celebrated in 2012, International Day of the Girl was created to recognize the challenges girls face, advocate for equal opportunities, and amplify their voices.

And what better way to celebrate than by recognizing the women who helped change skateboarding forever?

From Patti McGee becoming the first women’s national skateboarding champion in 1964 to Peggy Oki breaking barriers with the legendary Z-Boys, these women helped shape a sport that generations of girls now call their own.

Stephanie Person, Elissa Steamer, Cara-Beth Burnside, and Mimi Knoop pushed boundaries, challenged expectations, and fought for opportunities that didn’t always exist.

And today, young athletes like Sky Brown and Rayssa Leal are showing the world what’s possible when girls are given the space to dream big.

Representation matters. Access matters. Opportunity matters.

At Surf Skate Science, we believe the next generation of girls deserves more than a seat at the table. They deserve the confidence, tools, and opportunities to build their own future, whether that’s on a skateboard, in a science lab, or anywhere their curiosity takes them.

Because when girls see what’s possible, they begin to imagine what they can accomplish.

A huge thank you to our friends at @skatebird305 for originally sharing this incredible tribute to the women who paved the way. We’re proud to reshare it today.

Here’s to the girls who came before us, the girls pushing boundaries today, and the girls who will change the world tomorrow.

Happy International Day of the Girl!

Almost 30 years ago, Mack Dawg Productions released SIMPLE PLEASURES. Almost 30 years ago, the first Winter X Games went down.

Now there’s an X Games Draft. So naturally, we rewatched SIMPLE PLEASURES—and we’d draft the entire cast.

A few SIMPLE PLEASURES riders who took home hardware in 1997:

1. Daniel Franck @the_real_dfranck — 1st Men’s Slopestyle, 2nd Men’s Halfpipe

2 Cara-Beth Burnside @carabethburnside — 2nd Women’s Slopestyle. And if women’s skateboarding had been in the X Games yet... we know who we’d be drafting there too.

3. Bjorn Leines @bjornleines — 3rd Men’s Big Air

Go do some preseason homework and rewatch SIMPLE PLEASURES. And the best way to get into the full Mack Dawg archive is to grab the USB from VGsnow.com
