Tomorrow is International Day of Climate Action 🤸‍♀️

Here’s four things you can do without leaving the house 😁

1. Download my PDF ‘Big Impact. 6 Ways’ Low effort, and will save you money. Link in Bio.

2. Look for a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing. This is the most important film of the year. With over 3000 screenings to-date across the UK, this film brings communities together to talk about what concerns them the most. @nebriefing

3. Sign up for a Carbon Literacy course. I’m running a course next week, on Wednesday 28th/29th. Not only does Carbon Literacy meet you where you are, it clarifies the ‘why’ behind meaningful climate action.

4. Explore takethejump.org. This is a brilliant initiative exploring the 6 area where you can take action. @takethejumpnow

Now, you may not want to attend a screening or head out to plant a tree in your Pajamas! But your first step to embedding climate action into your everyday life is to cast your eye over these suggestions and see what resonates with you! 🤩

Happy Friday you Foxy lot 🦊

I am still buzzing from last week’s @outrageoptimism podcast live at Bath Abbey 🌍

Hosted as part of the University of Bath’s 60th anniversary Adelard series, the room was packed with honest, frank and hopeful conversations about powering the next generation to lead climate action.

The leading question was described by @cfigueres Christiana Figueres as the ‘North Star’ question:

How do we move beyond just asking our leaders? How do we step up?

Start with asking yourself:
💛 What are you passionate about?
💛 What does the world need?
💛 How can you contribute?

Beyond your Carbon footprint:
🍃Choose a career that ‘does good’
🍃Reflect on your skills and passions
🍃Choose what is good for you. Activism? Working on the inside? Influencing?

You can’t do it all, but we all have a unique role to play, and together our actions ripple out change.

In the podcast, Lorraine Whitmarsh, Environmental Psychologist said: ‘…people actually have multiple roles that they can play to tackle climate change….we’re often told as a consumer what we can do….but some of these things are out of reach for many…there is a lot we can do as citizens, as members of communities and members of organisations’

Most people want to do something, they just want to know what their next something is.

I walked away feeling that optimism 🤩

The University of Bath introduced Carbon Literacy in 2021, with 600 students and staff now certified Carbon Literate! 💚

Join over 170,000 citizens and become Carbon Literate. Find your ‘something’👇

Becoming Carbon Literate changed how I saw myself as part of the solution, not as part of the problem.

My next courses are:
👩‍💻 Online:
Oct 28 & 29th 9am-1pm
Nov 11–12 (CLAD!), 9am–1pm
📒 In person:
Nov 7, Sustainability Centre, East Meon, 9:30am-4:30pm

Today, at the opening plenary of @theforumea Conference in Lisbon, the Accademia Europea di Firenze was named a winner at the inaugural CANIE Climate Awards. It is our first international award.

When we signed the CANIE Accord in September 2022, becoming the first Italian educational institution to do so, we made a choice. Sustainability would not simply sit among our core values; it would shape how we work every day. Since then, that has meant:

• Carbon Literacy training for students, staff and faculty
• tree planting across Tuscany
• the UN Sustainable Development Goals woven into our courses
• an annual Sustainability Week

This award belongs to our people. To our staff and faculty: thank you for believing that, together, we are building a better future for everyone.

My particular thanks go to Daniel Ponce-Taylor and Matteo Fusco, who have led this work with vision and generosity, and to every member of our Sustainability Action Group. My thanks also go to John Pearson, our first SAG Chair, who encouraged us to take that very first step.

Thank you to CANIE: Climate Action Network for International Educators, both for creating these awards and for holding our sector to a higher standard. Thank you also to The Forum on Education Abroad for hosting the announcement.

Finally, thank you to our partner universities. Climate action in international education is never the work of one institution alone, and we are proud to walk this path with you.

To colleagues across the sector: every commitment counts, and the Accord gives us all a clear place to start. Let’s keep raising our ambition, together.

Recently I went along to Kettering Town Council’s screening of the @nebriefing , followed by presentations from a brilliant range of local organisations working on climate, nature and community resilience.

There were some pretty sobering messages about where we’re heading - from extreme weather and flooding, to food security, health, biodiversity loss and national security.

And while I’m not going to pretend I came away thinking everything is going to be fine… I did come away reminded that there is a huge amount of good work already happening locally, something that I have been so lucky to see firsthand over the last couple of years.

From litter picks and tree planting, to protecting wildlife, connecting habitats, getting children involved, promoting active travel and using art to help people engage with nature, people across Kettering are already doing something about it.

One line particularly stuck with me:

Resilience doesn’t start with the emergency. It starts with the infrastructure and communities that can work together before it happens.

The challenges are enormous, and we shouldn’t minimise them.

But neither should we underestimate what we can do when people, organisations and communities work together.

Thank you to everyone who organised the screening and to all the groups who shared what they’re doing.

The next screening is in Desborough on 21st October, go and see it if you can and lobby your MP to take action!

On October 24th, it will be International Day of Climate Action 💥

Whether you’re lost in the chaos of climate change, or teetering into Action mode, it can feel difficult trying to navigate your way through what you can do.

There’s a lot of ‘advice’ out there, there is a constant media stream of pending doom - it’s enough to just make you want to bury your head in the sand.

You don’t have to take giant leaps or make radical changes.

You can just explore the small stuff, understand what individual action really means and feel clear on how that action is helping.

Doing a Carbon Literacy course may feel ‘too much’ as well.

For me, it was the best first step I ever made.

So I wrote my own course, knowing it was the best way to bring people together, alleviate anxiety and embed hope into my daily life.

Next course runs a few days after October 24th - but signing up could be your one-stop bit of climate action!

We hope you’re doing well amidst recent scary climate news, with the worst El Niño in a thousand years recently reported 😓

It’s predicted to take us past not just 1.5C of average global heating for a period, but 2C. Climate researcher Dr Nicholas Beuret says, “this is the difference between what is merely dangerous climate change and absolute catastrophe.”

This “climate supercycle” will accelerate food prices, resource shortages, disrupt supply chains and increase economic instability.

It’s so easy to feel powerless, but every person and organisation has the power to instead contribute to a Just Transition and dramatically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

We’re here to support you in making a difference!

👉 Our Carbon Literacy Course for Fashion and Retail breaks down the science and gives best practice studies, industry approaches to inspire and motivate, and the tools you need to build climate action in your role & organisation.

Don’t miss the chance to join our upcoming online course on 30 October & 6 November, 9am-1pm GMT!

We’re delighted to share that St Barbe Museum + Art Gallery has achieved Silver Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) Status!
🌿
This accreditation recognises our ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and helping build a low-carbon future.
🐝
Our Carbon Literacy journey began thanks to the enthusiasm and leadership of Prue Baker, who delivered training across the organisation. As a result, all staff, trustees and volunteers became Carbon Literate, making personal pledges to reduce their environmental impact.
🌱
To progress from Bronze to Silver status, we worked with children on a summer project to create a wildlife area in the museum grounds. Together they built a bug hotel, transformed a recycled pallet into a planter filled with pollinator-friendly flowers, and designed a pond to support local wildlife.
🌼
We’ve also been proud to host our popular Climate Chats, bringing together expert speakers and our community to discuss topics including water, farming and soil health, with more events planned for 2027.
🍃
Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey including Hampshire and IOW Wildlife Trust @hantsiwwildlife and New Forest Transition @newforesttransition . Together, we’re making a difference for our community and the environment. 🌏

On Monday, I asked a question about the building behind me in the video - you’ll have to watch it to find the answer!

It’s quite a long video for me, but the answer is fascinating, hopeful and innovative!

You don’t have to construct a building like this to make a difference.
But you can be the building block!
