And, it went a little something like this…

#haitianflagday 🇭🇹 🔊 SOUND ON 🔊

Festivals, parades, street parties and community gatherings — just bring the Kompa music and Haitians will flock over in groves!!! 😂
Seriously — No one knows how to throw down like these students, though! 💃🏽 💯💯💯

Main songs playing:
🥁 “Se Pa Pou Dat” by Alan Cavé (sped up)
🥁 “Ayiti (Bang Bang)” by Carimi (sped up)
🥁 “40%” by Aya Nakamura (sped up)

I’m still learning more myself, but here’s a little history:
— The Haitian flag was created and adopted in 1803. And each part of it holds significant meaning.

— Haitian Flag Day 🇭🇹 is celebrated annually on May 18th. It commemorates the creation of the Haitian flag during the 1803 Haitian Revolution.

— The day holds great Cultural significance. It’s not just high-energy vibes… The celebrations honor over TWO CENTURIES of independence, resilience, and rich Haitian heritage!!!

— Jean-Jacques Dessalines was the Revolutionary leader behind it all. He tore the white stripe out of the French tricolor flag to symbolize the rejection of colonial rule.

— His goddaughter, Catherine Flon, then sewed the blue and red stripes together to create the FIRST official Haitian flag. (And, it eventually evolved from then).

— This day is different from Haiti’s INDEPENDENCE Day, which is celebrated every year on January 1st — and marks Haiti’s liberation from French colonial rule in 1804!

— In the 1930s, President Dumarsais Estimé officially established “Flag Day” as an annual national holiday.

Everywhere you turn, you are bound to run into a Haitian. And when you do, say “SAK PASÈ!” (It means “What’s up?/What’s going on?” in Kreyol).

And there you have it! History lesson done.
📚 “Class dismissed!” 😁
