If you could choose your own name, would you? What would it reveal about who you truly are? Six months ago, I made a decision that changed everything. I changed my name. My first, middle, and last. On the surface, it came with marriage. I felt safe, supported, and excited to take my husband’s last name. But beneath that was something deeper. For years, I had felt more connected to my middle name, Carissa. I even tried it on in college, but I wasn’t ready to fully claim it. This time, I was. As I began the name change process, I felt a pull I couldn’t ignore. Then I heard a phrase that gave it meaning: coming home to yourself. That’s exactly what it was. This leap wasn’t about becoming someone new. It was about returning to who I’ve always been. Still, it wasn’t easy. I feared how others would react. I knew I’d have to explain myself again and again. And I did. The questions came. The discomfort was real. But this time, I didn’t retreat. Instead, I stayed grounded in my choice and found something deeper than validation. I found self-assurance. Before this, I often felt like I was performing, showing up as who I thought I needed to be. But that version of me started to fade. Now, at 33, I show up fully and freely as Carissa Watts Tucker. And that has made all the difference. My biggest lesson: the most important commitment you can make is to yourself. When you choose what feels true, even when it’s uncomfortable, you begin to come home. — Hi, I’m Carissa, a corporate communications executive and brand storyteller who helps people feel seen, heard, and understood. I build culture, ask thoughtful questions, and bring stories to life. A proud South Georgia girl now living in Atlanta, I’m learning to take up more space and step into public speaking and hosting. My life transformed when I stopped waiting for permission and started choosing myself, listening inward, and following what feels true, even when the path is unfamiliar. *This leap story was created and edited by the Quantum Leap Experience team, based on a written submission by Carissa* #QuantumLeapStories
