5 years ago today, we had to say goodbye. 5 years of unanswered questions. Jelani’s body was mutilated, eyeballs were missing, his teeth were missing and we want to know why. No family should have to deal with this. No family should have to go through what we’ve been through. Today we ask for support, love, and grace because the emotional toll of Jelani’s death is one that has forever changed us.

Happy birthday to the honorable Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. Rev. Jesse Jackson was much more than just a an icon and a legend - he became our family. He heard Carmen Day’s plea for help and became a supporter, an advocate, a confidant, and an undeniable fighter for Jelani Day. He allowed the Day Family to stand on his shoulders and ensure that Jelani Day will not be forgotten or disregarded. He amplified Jelani. He displayed in real time what it meant to keep hope alive. He demonstrated how to use his image for the oppressed and unheard. Today we honor the legend that we got the esteemed privilege to call ‘Pops.’ We love you always and we thank you for eternally for welcoming us into your life; which was indeed a life well lived.

THE HILL. HIS HOME. HIS LEGACY.

This Homecoming, the Jelani Day Foundation is honored to return to Alabama A&M University for the Homecoming Parade, representing Jelani at his alma mater.

We’re grateful to have HA2 and the brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. standing alongside us as we honor Jelani’s legacy and continue the fight for Justice for Jelani Day.

Jelani was a scholar, athlete, leader, fraternity brother, and proud Bulldog. He also served as Mister A&M and the official escort to Hyidea Burgess, Miss A&M 2018.

Now, we invite YOU to stand with us. Whether you knew Jelani, shared the Hill with him, or simply believe in justice, come march alongside us.

Come home. Stand with us. March for Jelani.

DM the Jelani Day Foundation for parade details and information on how to participate.

JUSTICE FOR JELANI DAY.

The autopsy results of Nolan Wells that were released yesterday has made us feel like we’re reliving 2021 all over again. In contrary to the stereotype that Black people don’t swim, Jelani Day and Nolan Wells were well equipped to handle water and swim with ease. The autopsy findings are a slap in the face and a clear sign of why we cannot give up the fight. We must fight even harder today than ever before because these young men had bright futures ahead. These young men were their mother’s babies. Nolan Wells and Jelani Day DID NOT DROWN!

Let’s not forget the details of Jelani Day: his case is still open, we are still searching for answers. This is one of the many segments that are a constant reminder that Jelani’s case is still unsolved. Someone murdered Jelani Day and we deserve to know why.

From the bottom of our hearts here at the Jelani Day Foundation, we want to humbly thank each and every single individual that attended our event. It was often mentioned that the Day Family exemplify strength and resilience but if it were not for God and you all, our ever-growing village, we would not have made it this far. It is because of all of you that we are able to continue Jelani’s legacy and ensure that no other family has to endure what we have been through.

#Justiceforjelaniday isn’t just a fight that belongs to the Day Family, this is all of our fight. Jelani could have been your son, your brother, and it is up to us to continue fighting because something happened to Jelani. Someone murdered Jelani and we need to know why. So please continue standing and fight with us because we have only just begun making noise. We need answers, we need accountability, we need #justiceforjelaniday.

5 years later

5 years ago today, Jelani Day was last seen alive. He was getting ready for his clinicals, walking the Illinois State University campus. He then was seen at the Beyond Hello Dispensary and after pulling off from the parking lot and driving past a Dollar General store, the rest is a mystery. Time hasn’t eased the pain, it’s only made us fight harder. For 5 long years we have had to endure, we’ve had to suffer, we’ve had to pray even harder and be put in positions we’ve never imagined but we’re not stopping. We are fighting harder than we ever have before because Jelani’s life matters. Jelani was needed on this Earth and justice isn’t a thing that is earned, it is Jelani’s God given right to have. By God’s unwavering strength and mercy we will continue this fight until justice is served. We love you Jelani Jesse Javontae Day.

Thank you @chicagodefender for highlighting our 4th Annual Jelani Day Foundation Fundraising Gala. In approaching this somber anniversary, our growing community of family and supporters choose to celebrate Jelani’s amazing life and the problem-solver he had grown to be, by working toward a solution to the systemic problem of inequity. We do that by supporting others in need and doing so in his name.
