Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year. There’s one day to go before we find out this year’s winners and what trophies will they receive? I have been creating trophies for the winners since 1998 and every year I sculpt the animals in the winning images. Here are the Young winners’ trophies over the years, which is your favourite? @nhm_wpy #wildlifephotography #animalsculpture #wildlifelovers #nickmackman #animalart

These barn owls keeping watch over a busy road from their concrete perch were the subjects of Carmel Bechler’s (@carmel_bechler) image that won him the title of Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023.

Kathy Moran, Editor and Chair of the Jury, noted how this image “simultaneously screams habitat destruction and adaptation, begging the question: if wildlife can adapt to our environment, why can’t we respect theirs?”

Returning to where he’d spotted a barn owl the previous year, Carmel and his father used the family car as a hiding spot.

Carmel made the most of the natural light and used long exposure times to capture the light trails of passing traffic.

Israel has the densest barn owl population in the world. A national project has provided nesting boxes near agricultural fields, encouraging owls to nest near farmland. It’s an initiative that’s proved mutually beneficial and led to the reduced use of rodenticides, as the owls hunt rodents that eat seeds and crops.

📸 ‘Owls’ Road House’ won Carmel #WPY59’s 15-17 Years category as well as the title of Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023.

Chamois and the Larch

After waking up at 5am we hiked through a mysterious forest and arrived up on a ridge. That was where we found a group of chamois next to some beautiful colored larches.

Onset of Winter

This weekend i've spent 2 Days in the snow searching for wildlife with @photography_ilay @carmel_bechler

I walked along a ridge and searched the slope. with the hope of seeing ptarmigan.
I saw some beautiful icicles and thought about how nice it would look with a ptarmigan sitting underneath them. Then I suddenly discovered this snow hare that I hadn't noticed before (:
