Another entry into the hippie cookbook hall of fame. This one, found on a San Francisco sidewalk by a friend, has many of the telling marks of the hippie cookbooks of its day — entirely handwritten (I continue to be gobsmacked by this on a number of levels), simple recipes focused on ingredients rather than technique, and—here again—full frontal nudity on the cover. This book with its poetical title was published by Dutton in 1971, written by @carrieaginsky and Melinda Peterson In the 1950s and 1960s there had been a wave of "convenience" cookbooks (including my beloved I Hate to Cook Book, the Can-Opener Cookbook, etc etc etc). There was a lot of talk around “easy” and “quick.” Cookbooks were helping women get OUT of the kitchen. You’re more than this, baby! No shade — of course women should get out of the kitchen if that is what they want to do. But the other side of the convenience of convenience food is their lack of nutritional value, their perversion of flavor, our alienation from the creation and production of what we eat, and our increasing domination by corporate overlords and their raping of the Earth for profit (Whoa Debbie! Deep breaths! Head between the knees!) In the introduction of this book Melinda Peterson writes “Who do you know who makes their own tomato sauce?” In 2023, we probably can answer: a lot of people! Let’s thanks the hippie cookbooks, in part, for reminding us that food is worth paying attention to. That it can be in our own hands, rather than "theirs". And for offering an alternative to Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise. Plus just delight in the whimsy going on here! 'Scuse me while I kiss the sky. 😍 @carrieaginsky: if you’re out there, give us some more context around the creation of this book! #hippiecookboks #cookbooks #yashaaginsky

. . . . . . . #music #orchestra #choir #amateur #auvergne #puydedome #thiers #ciediscobole
