This month I hit 3 years of sobriety. Getting sober was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Staying sober through the highs and lows of life is even harder. Feeling everything, fully, without numbing the pain or the joy, without reaching for an escape. Sobriety doesn’t take away all my struggles, but it is something I am proud of while I continue to work on myself.

Alcohol impacted my childhood, my teen years, and my adulthood. I’ve been surrounded by alcohol my entire life. When I started drinking, I didn’t realize I was stepping into the very thing that had already shaped me.

I actually thought being the “fun” party girl was what made people like me. Even though I hardly liked myself. What most people didn’t witness was how alcohol quietly deepened my depression. How it convinced me that I wasn’t worthy of love, or friendship, or family, or even worthy enough to live this life.

To those who have cheered me on from the very beginning (when I couldn’t string 4 days together) and to anyone who has supported me on this journey, I love you and I appreciate you. I share my story because if you are even questioning your relationship with booze, I hope that you find comfort knowing you are not alone.

Here’s to 3 years. I wish I could give little Shan the warmest hug. ❤️‍🩹

Last year I attended my first chicago marathon despite living in the chicagoland area my entire life. I fell in love with all the emotions this race brings and how it puts the best city in the world in the spot light. I set out this morning to capture the moments before everyone arrives at grant park. Everyone has their way of dealing with pre-race nerves. I wanted to focus on the ‘L’ because it’s one of the unique experiences of our marathon bringing everyone into downtown. You’re forced to mingle with folks and get uncomfortable packing into a metal box.
