What does meaningful participation in the art world actually look like?

That question anchored an incredible conversation with Janice Bond and Alaina Gibbs at the 3rd Annual Woody Art Collection Summer Salon on Martha’s Vineyard.

We talked about stewardship, cultural capital, community, and the responsibility each of us carries in shaping which artists, institutions, and stories endure.

One thing became clear: the time to be good stewards of our American history is now.

Collecting art is about more than ownership. It is about participation. It is about supporting artists, engaging institutions, creating access, preserving stories, and understanding that the decisions we make today will help determine how this era is understood 50 years from now.

Grateful to Janice and Alaina for bringing such thoughtful perspectives to the conversation, and to everyone who joined us on the Vineyard. And special thanks to Cheri and Chad Larkins for hosting us.

The art of today will tell the story of tomorrow. Our responsibility is to help ensure that story is preserved.

I was fortunate and pleased to bring together nearly 100 established and new collectors, art enthusiasts, museum trustees, and arts administration professionals for the Martha’s Vineyard Black Art Collectors Champagne Summer Social. Held at @thelegacyhousemv in Oak Bluffs, it was a warm, energetic evening designed to build community, friendship, and information sharing about the visual arts.

Special thanks to @creative_capital Board Chair @rmb.collection for his wise words of wisdom and call to action and to Chad and Cheri Larkins for hosting us in their beautiful and historic home. Until next time 🎨. #artcollector #purpose
