Today in 1945, the United Nations is established. Following the First World War, an international organization was sought, which would seek the aim of preventing another worldwide conflict. As such, the League of Nations was established, which first met on January 16, 1920. Aside from preventing another world conflict, the League also sought the prevention of human and drug trafficking, protection of Indigenous rights, and restrictions on arms trading.

The League proved largely unsuccessful, as it lacked its own military, and relied heavily on the armed forces of the former Allied Powers. The League’s efficiency in preventing another global conflict proved ineffective with the outbreak of World War II in 1939. The destruction wrought across Europe and Asia from 1939-1945 led to the belief that a stronger unity of nations was needed, which would not only attempt to prevent another world war, but also punish any nation guilty of waging aggressive war.

The League of Nations was dissolved on April 16, 1946, having been replaced with the United Nations. The UN Charter was signed in San Francisco, California on June 26, 1945, and the organization entered into effect on October 24 of that year. Originally consisting of 51 members, this number has since grown to 193, with two others - Holy See and Palestine - serving as non-member observer states. The organization is headquartered in New York City, New York.

Since its founding, the United Nations has overseen the implementation of peacekeeping forces in multiple conflicts, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. The first Acting Secretary General of the UN was Gladwyn Jebb of Britain, while the first to assume the official role of Secretary General was Trygve Lie of Norway. The current Secretary General is Antonio Guterres of Portugal, who assumed the office on January 1, 2017.

Today in 1983, the Beirut Barracks Bombings are committed. With the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War, which began on April 13, 1975, multiple factions fought for control of the country, notably the Lebanese Front and the Lebanese National Movement. The LF was composed mostly of Christian Nationalists, while the LNM consisted of Pan-Arab Islamists and Communists.

Fought amid the Cold War, both factions were aided by their respective Western and Eastern allies. The LF was joined by Israel, while the Palestinian Liberation Organization and Iran aided the LNM. Syria also joined the conflict, fighting in the east and north. In 1978, the United Nations launched a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, consisting of soldiers from the United States, Britain, France, and Italy. In 1982, this became a Multinational Task Force.

On October 23, 1983, the US Marine Corps Barracks and French Drakkar Barracks in Beirut were approached by su*cide bombers. At 6:22 AM, the first bomb detonated at the US Barracks, k*lling 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and three soldiers. The second bomb exploded at the French barracks, k*lling 55 paratroopers from the 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment and three from the 9th Regiment. Likewise, a Lebanese janitor, along with his wife and children, lost their lives.

Islamic J*had claimed responsibility for the attacks, and it was later discovered that Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence played a role. The bombings resulted in the deadliest day for US forces since the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War, and the worst day for the French military since the Algerian War. The Lebanese Civil War concluded on October 13, 1990, resulting in multiple changes. Palestinian Arabs were expelled from Lebanon, while Islamic representation was increased over Christianity in the government. Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, while Syria withdrew in 2005.

A Syrian government journalist is warning Israel that it could face 25 million Syrians united on one front. In the same video, he chants “Khaybar, Khaybar, ya Yahud,” a hostile anti Jewish slogan that is related to the historical defeat of Jewish tribes in Saudi Arabia and is used today as a threat to kill Jews. This come as Syrian officials allege that Druze armed groups in Sweida are preparing an offensive with Israeli backing. With southern Syria still vulnerable to renewed clashes following the deadly violence against Druze back July 2025, this kind of language risks another set of rising tensions. The allegations of Israeli support for a Druze offensive are unverified, but the “journalist” who participated in the overthrow of the former Syrian government in his own words are on record and are a prime example of how a press vest is used as cover.

Today in 1956, the Hungarian Uprising begins. During World War II, the Kingdom of Hungary became a member of the Axis Powers, aligning itself with the German Reich and the Kingdom of Italy. While Hungary initially participated in the Axis Invasion of the USSR, the government - fearing a Soviet occupation - later sought an alliance with the Allies. As a result, Germany established the Government of National Unity of Hungary. This puppet state, however, was dissolved in April 1945, with the Soviet occupation of Hungary.

In 1956, protesting the regime of the Communist occupation, anti-Soviet students marched through Budapest. This followed the establishment of the Hungarian People’s Republic and the state’s attempt to purge 7,000 political and religious dissidents. The first stages of the revolution broke out in June of that year, though the official uprising as armed conflict did not begin until October 23.

On that day, protesters rallied and demanded a Democratic Socialist state, free from Soviet rule. That afternoon, the demonstrators destroyed a statue of former Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin. The Red Army arrived and suppressed the rebellion, which ended on November 4, 1956. Over 3,000 people were k*lled during the uprising and more than 200,000 Hungarians fled the country. On October 23, 1989, the Communist regime was abolished, and the Republic of Hungary was established, which was followed by democratic reforms.

A major South Korean construction company, DL E&C, has been found to have supplied turbine lubricant to a Russian petrochemical plant, according to Monthly Chosun.

The @dekleptoproject — a US anti-corruption NGO and member of the B4Ukraine Coalition — highlighted that the U.S. Department of the @treasurydept identifies turbine oil as a product that can expose foreign financial institutions involved in related transactions with Russia to secondary sanctions.

We call on US authorities to investigate this case and on DL E&C to halt all its operations in Russia.
