@westwindpics presents:
#CastAsideTheClouds: a Baha’i woman and a Muslim doctor fall in love in Iran, facing intense persecution and imprisonment.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My SF/Bay Area friends, I helped produced a movie and would love to have you join me at our screening this Friday!

Following successful screenings across N. America, Cast Aside The Clouds (@castasidetheclouds) is now coming to the Bay Area!

This powerful feature film, which a few friends and I helped bring to life, tells a story of love, courage, and resilience while shedding light on the religious persecution endured by so many under the Islamic Republic in Iran.

Prejudice drew the line. Their love crossed it.

Stories like this deserve to be told, shared, and seen by audiences everywhere. I hope my friends in the Bay Area will join us for this special screening on Friday, October 23, at 7 PM at the Orinda Theatre, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Bravo to Behnood Dadfar (2012) as director of photography for the feature film, “CAST ASIDE THE CLOUDS” which had its red carpet premiere screening May 18th at the SVA theater and a worldwide theatrical release. The film is a love story following the journey of Layla Khosravi and Dr. Sasan Naderi as they navigate the complexities of love and faith in modern day Iran — a country divided by religious prejudice. This is the first feature film to feature a Baha’i, a persecuted minority in Iran, falling in love with a Muslim from a conservative background. Dadfar’s cinematography deftly captures the emotional range of the story from the tenderness of the romance to the incredibly difficult interrogation scenes.

For every time I was treated differently because of my Bahá’í faith.
For every door that felt closed because of who I was.

This film brought back memories of the discrimination and injustice Bahá’ís in Iran have endured for generations.

May their stories be heard, and may awareness lead us toward a world where no one is treated differently because of their faith.

Last night, I watched Cast Aside the Clouds in the theatre alongside the producers and filmmakers, and I left with much more than the memory of a beautiful film.

For more than 180 years, the Bahá’ís of Iran have faced persecution, discrimination, imprisonment, and even death simply because of their beliefs. What struck me most about this film is how powerfully it reveals the destructive force of prejudice—and what can happen when people accept what they are told without questioning, investigating, or seeking the truth for themselves.

It made me reflect on one of the most important responsibilities we have as human beings: to investigate truth independently. To question prejudice. To look beyond what we have inherited, what we have been taught, and what others tell us to believe.

Because history reminds us that when prejudice replaces investigation, humanity can suffer deeply.

A powerful film. A difficult history. And a message that feels as relevant today as ever. 🤍

To all our Coffeehouse friends in Hamilton + Toronto 🫵🫵🫵

We would love for you to come see Cast Aside the Clouds, a beautiful, award-winning film by Mary Darling, who some of you may remember from speaking at The Coffeehouse!

So much of what we’ve tried to explore through The Coffeehouse is how our careers, talents and interests can be directed towards the betterment of humanity. How can every action we take become ways of serving others, challenging injustice and changing the way people see the world?

Cast Aside the Clouds is such a beautiful example of this. Told through a love story set in contemporary Iran, the film explores discrimination against women, religious prejudice, and the courage it takes to question the assumptions we inherit.

For anyone interested in film, storytelling, media or human rights, this is also a really special chance to meet the film’s lead actress and director and hear from artists using their careers to speak about issues that matter (or hit some networking 🤭)

The film has received 17 international awards and honours and is currently on its festival run, and, because the film is dedicated to youth, everyone 30 and under can attend for $20.

☁️ HAMILTON — Aug. 26, 7 PM @ The Westdale
☁️ TORONTO — Aug. 29, 7 PM @ Isabel Bader Theatre

Both screenings will be followed by a Q&A with members of the cast and filmmaking team.

Come, bring your friends, and stay for the conversation afterwards. It feels so connected to what we hoped The Coffeehouse could be: a place where art, meaningful conversation, friendship and service come together. It would be so cool to see you there 🫶🫶
