Thank you to everyone who came to see Praxis during New Annual. It was wonderfully new and challenging to collaborate with a dancer for this project. And I love what we hatched @jacintalarosa

Anatomy of a Stream is a choreographic inquiry into what emerges when bodies, relationships and ecosystems move between states of flow and control. Movement of water becomes both material and metaphor, tracing the tensions between fluidity and constraint, transformation and adaptation.

Drawing on the concept of counter-mapping, artist Ellie follows a creek as it meanders from suburban forest to concrete urban channel. A sound work produced in collaboration with Clint Topic and textile installation become new forms of bathymetry, examining the changing characteristics of the creek’s infrastructures and ecologies. Field recordings of ripples, tumbling stones, submerged movement and industry form an abstracted visual and sonic language responsive to the creek’s shifting conditions.

Dancer Jacinta responds through an embodied exploration of algae, an organism that sustains aquatic life while also signalling ecological stress. Her movements shift between fluidity and constraint, performing currents, eddies and ripples alongside the pressures of altered waterways and human control.
Thank you to everyone involved in Praxis’ sold-out season.

PRAXIS presented five new interdisciplinary collaborations, bringing together five Catapult choreographers and five visual artists from The Creator Incubator.

Thank you to Newcastle Art Gallery, Braddon Snape, and The Creator Incubator.

Thanks again to Kyle for his incredible dance. What a beautiful thing to be a part of. Thanks to @catapult_dance for the great opportunity to make this work, and to @creatensw for funding its creation. It was a brilliant opportunity to be able to launch the work in the newly rebuilt @newcastleartgalleryaustralia , what a sensational space and team to work with. As artists, we don't need to sit on the fence, we can use our work to chart complex emotions and share them with the audience. It was interesting looking at the faces of those watching this dance, a mixture of shock, repulsion, awe. It grabbed me but the heart and squeezed, every time I saw it performed, and it still brings tingles to my skin when I think of it. The work would not have happened without me having a studio @thecreatorincubator and the generosity of the brilliant and kind @braddonsnape allowing us to finalise the work in the Incubator's gallery. Sound is essential for dance, and the backing track, also made by Kyle, was beautiful, building and unrelenting. Thanks @kyle_ramboyong , you're one massively talented, hardworking and lovely human. It was super awesome to be a part of the incredible @newannual . What a time to be alive in Newcastle, I'm very thankful to be here right now. Thanks also to our mate Luke for helping compile the sound and to the legendary @zackari_watt for your mastering genius. I am immensely proud of this work and hope to share it with more of you in the future. #dance #artisticcollaboration #installationart #contemporaryartaustralia

A little post-IMPACT reflection ✨

I had the opportunity to present my work at Impact Festival this year in Lake Macquarie, presented by @catapult_dance.

It was a big push to get there, but I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and feel very lucky to have had such a great group of collaborators and dancers alongside me. Huge love to @robininkchen , @emisime__ and @samcheook for bringing so much professionalism, determination and open-mindedness to this project, and for trusting the process and the work.

We had also performed the work at Duti's Outset Choreography Awards only a week prior, which definitely tested our resilience! But having the opportunity to perform the work twice in such a short space of time allowed us to keep refining it, learning from it and finding new things within it.

More than anything, the experience reminded me to be proud of the work I’m making, to trust my ideas, and to believe in myself and what I have to offer as an artist.

Feeling very grateful for everyone who has been part of the journey so far. ❤️

Here are a few pics from the night, video footage coming soon 👀

What an absolute privilege to deliver so many events within this festival, my gratitude to Tory Loudon and @citynewcastle.au for the trust and opportunity is endless. This festival is a dream come true. To deliver a creative arts and music festival in my home town and bring in so much local community as collaborators is an absolute thrill. The New Annual team are so dedicated and brilliant, my Canvas Crew are incredible and my suppliers are the absolute best.

Not surprising to see tears shed in the audience this morning watching the incredibly beautiful performance by @catapult_dance at the Canoe Pool, where Cavitation: Breathing Ocean by @izabelapluta__studio has also bewitched bystanders, swimmers and art enthusiasts. We are so darn lucky to have @newannual festival and the creative artists we do in Newy ❤️💙
