Have you read @kraus_author’s Whalefall? Seen the movie yet?
•
I first read this back in September 2023 and loved it. I decided to reread before the movie came out and it was just as good the second time. If you haven’t read Whalefall yet, you absolutely need to. This book is a work of art. It’s beautifully, horrific, and just flat out amazing.
•
@catdelani and I went to the movies last night to see the adaptation from @briancduffield & co. Holy shit… what a movie, man. @joshbrolin was a PERFECT Mitt and Austin Abrams was outstanding as Jay. Not only was the acting superb, but the movie was visually stunning. The depiction of the whale’s echolocation underwater left me in awe. The claustrophobia was captured so well. The film nailed the emotional beats too. Hands down one of the best adaptations of a book I’ve seen.
•
And of course we had to get the popcorn bucket 😂
•
This book is incredible, the movie was as well. Easy 5/5 for both, from me. If you haven’t read or watched yet, you need to.

Happy Publication Day, @stephengrahamjones and Off The Reservation!
•
The Only Good Indians is still one of my favorite SGJ books and an all-timer too, tbh. I was ecstatic when the pseudo-sequel, Off The Reservation, was announced. As soon as arcs were available, @catdelani & I grabbed them (thank you @sagapressbooks & @netgalley), read it immediately and it was a blast. @librofm had it as an October ALC, so of course I revisited it last week before pub day today. The audio production is fantastic and the story was just as good the second time around.
•
SGJ is truly special. He’s at the top of the genre and churning out masterpieces. If you didn’t know that already from his backlist, or from Buffalo Hunter Hunter sweeping the awards, then go grab a copy of Off The Reservation today! This book is truly brilliant. It may not get the award recognition The Only Good Indians got (it could), but it’s still a beautiful, gnarly, genius, horrific piece of literature.
•
Off The Reservation is a road-trip novel from Hell. It’s a novel about reparations and redemption; atonement. It’s a twisted story that will challenge you, but everything clicks together in ways only SGJ could make possible. It’s a possession story only SGJ could tell. If you like Evil Dead, there’s a few sections in here that definitely make me think of those movies.
•
I’m still in awe, after two reads, of just what he accomplished here. It’s such an insane book and somehow heartbreaking too. SGJ is one of a kind and we haven’t, and probably never will, see anyone like him.
•
This one’s an easy 5/5 from me and one of my top reads of the year. It’s absolutely brilliant, funny, disturbing, brutal, gnarly as hell, heartbreaking, beautiful, a mind-fuck and just an all around fantastic book. I can’t recommend it enough. If you haven’t read it yet, or didn’t have it preordered, run to the store and grab a copy. Read The Only Good Indians first though.

If you have read it, what did you think?

Maui has a love/hate relationship with moving
•
Love: extra shelf space, lots of boxes and packing materials to play in, hide in & chew, plus: new toys (that he doesn’t know about yet).
•
Hate: lots of changes 😂
•
We’re about to be in the thick of actually moving things into the new place so the excitement levels are skyrocketing!!

@foliosociety strikes again with another gorgeous @stephenking edition
•
Carrie, King’s first novel, is an iconic classic, and Folio did an amazing job giving us Constant Readers and collectors an edition to cherish. Thank you @catdelani for making sure we could get ahold of this beauty while I was swamped at work! And as you can tell by the artwork displayed on a cardboard box (swipe), we’re in the moving process, but of course that doesn’t stop our bookmail!
•
Anyway, what are your thoughts on this edition? On Carrie?

How many books do you think we own?
•
We’re moving! Upgrading to a better, more adult apartment for the newly weds 💁🏻‍♂️ But with that, comes packing all our books…
•
And so it begins… the move-out process 😅 and of course it’s on the heels of busy season so it’s a bit chaotic in the Petro household, but Cat’s holding it down and getting us in an amazing spot while Tony slaves away at work.
•
We’re excited and I’m sure there’s going to be more photo evidence of our packed boxes and this adventure.

Happy Birthday, @stephenking!!
•
What’s your favorite Stephen King moment/book/movie/story, etc.?
•
When in Maine for our honeymoon, of course we stopped by King’s iconic house in Bangor.
•
King is a legend and has done so much for the horror genre and is definitely a big part in what we’re seeing absolutely THRIVE today.
•
Happiest of birthdays to the King of Horror, and here’s to many more 🍻

🦌24 days until Off The Reservation🦌
•
On this Stephen Graham Jones Saturday, I wanted tin highlight his upcoming release: Off The Reservation. It comes out on October 13th, and it’s absolutely fantastic. @catdelani & I read it earlier this year (thank you @sagapressbooks for the arcs), and it’s definitely one of my top reads of the year. Which is no surprise considering:
•
SGJ 👏🏼 does 👏🏼 not 👏🏼 miss 👏🏼
•
Mine and @matts_books.and.drams’s SGJ Book Club is currently hosting a readalong for Off The Reservation’s predecessor, The Only Good Indians. I can’t wait to discuss it with the chat, and then for everyone who hasn’t read OTR yet to dive in when it’s released so we can all freak out collectively!
•
Anyway, happy Saturday, nerds, and please go read this (these) book(s).

Best @aardvarkbookclub month yet!?
•
It’s been a while since @catdelani & I had a 3-book month, but Aardvark left us no choice when THESE 3 books were options!
•
@rossonkeith’s Crone and @scotthawkinswrites’s Blacktail are both top books of the year for me, and @tananarivedue’s Mazywood is one of my most-anticipated.
•
What were your Aardvark choices this month? Have you read these? Are you excited to? If you haven’t, you need to.

🚨New favorite @rachelharrisonsghost book!!🚨
•
Such Sharp Teeth has been my favorite Rachel Harrison novel since I read it (to start my RH journey) two years ago. After finishing her latest release, Kiss Slay Replay (within a 24 hour period) Such Sharp Teeth has been dethroned. It was so good, @catdelani & I had @grimandgleeful read an excerpt while officiating our wedding*
•
*okay, this didn’t happen, but it was set at a wedding, and I wanted to play with one of our early photos (thanks grandma @patriciacironidutrow). Our wonderful photographer, @royalpoff.exe has some amazing ones already in our gallery and more coming, so more will be shared soon.
•
ANYWAY: 💋🔪🔄
•
🚨New favorite @rachelharrisonsghost book!!🚨
•
Kiss Slay Replay is phenomenal. Full stop. Rachel is an absolute powerhouse in the genre and this book is the perfect example of why she NEEDS to be (already is) in the conversation for the tippy-top tier of authors in the game right now. Period.
•
Not only is this my new favorite season of Harrison’s Horror House (or Harrison’s House Of Horrors), it’s also definitely among my top reads of the year. Kiss Slay Replay is brilliant. It kept me guessing the whole time. At no point did I have any idea what was coming next. It had me on the edge of my seat, heart racing, eyes wide, jaw dropped, and in absolute awe at every turn of the page.
•
With that awe, Rachel always has some heavy-hitting and extremely human, pertinent message or specific emotion or challenge in each of her books. Kiss Slay Replay was anxiety, identity and self-confidence/self-worth (among other things). It was beautifully done and makes the heart of this book so strong, and frankly important as hell.
•
You can draw comparisons to Happy Death Day or even Final Destination, but that’s a thin line and those are barely scratching the surface of Rachel Harrison’s genius within Kiss Slay Replay. There was a scene later that had me giddier than a kid opening their most anticipated present on Christmas morning.

August Wrap Up
•
We’re a week into September, how’s everyone’s reading going?
•
August was a “light” month for me, but mainly because right smack-dab in the middle of the month, I kinda had a small life event: I married @catdelani 🥰
•
This stack can be broken up into 3 sections: Pre-Wedding, Honeymoon, and Post-Wedding/Honeymoon.
•
Pre-Wedding August 1-14:
- @claymcleod’s Devil Inside
- @megbontra’s The Sea Hides Its Dead (Book of the year candidate)
- @lauriedoveauthor’s Mask Of The Deer Woman
- @adamcesare’s Clown In A Cornfield 4: Lights! Camera! Frendo!
- @saratogaishere’s Trad Wife
•
Honeymoon August 16-23:
- @scotthawkinswrites’s Blacktail (top-read candidate)
- @brian_keene & @christopher_golden’s anthology The End Of The World As We Know It
- @aniaahlborn’s Within These Walls
•
Post-Wedding/Honeymoon August 24-31:
- @stephenking & Peter Straub’s The Talisman
- @rossonkeith’s Crone (also book of the year candidate) and his short story collection Folk Songs For Trauma Surgeons
•
Technically my lightest month of the year in terms of finished books, but there’s some BANGERS in here and obviously the Wedding takes the cake and makes August my best month this year.
•
Did you read any of these in August? Earlier this year? Years prior? Thoughts? Questions? Concerns?
•
Happy Monday, nerds!
