It was fantastic to sit down with the Prime Minister alongside fellow rural Labour MPs to discuss the issues that matter to communities like South Norfolk.

As Vice Chair of the Rural Parliamentary Labour Party, I’m determined to make sure rural voices are heard where decisions are made. This Government understands that growing our economy and improving living standards means delivering for every part of the country, not just our biggest cities.

We discussed agriculture and horticulture, the backbone of our rural economy, alongside the wider challenges facing our communities: transport, trade and the future of essential public services.

On buses, I made the case for South Norfolk residents who have seen First Bus cut services despite the company making more than £100 million in profit last financial year. Rural people deserve reliable connections to work, healthcare and education. Where services are failing communities, we need to keep pushing for change.

We also discussed the Prime Minister’s work to reset our relationship with the EU. Getting closer to our European neighbours can help South Norfolk businesses trade, grow and create jobs. We must be honest about the damage Brexit has done and take practical steps to remove barriers to growth.

And on water, we talked about the need to put the public interest first. Our rivers and seas should not suffer while vital infrastructure crumbles. We need a system that delivers clean water, protects our environment and gives communities a better deal.

After years in which rural communities too often felt taken for granted, Labour is working to change that. These conversations show the importance this Government places on listening to rural MPs and understanding the realities of life beyond our cities.

A glimpse of our day yesterday. We travelled from the Wye Valley to Westminster to lobby our MPs and ask them to challenge the government’s proposed Poultry Growth Strategy. This plan is being dreamed up (nightmared up 🧟‍♂️🐔) by Defra and the Big Chicken lobby without any community engagement.

We think other voices, local voices, need to be in the room when it comes to developing our national food strategy to ensure that it works for our food security, our farmers and the environment.

Thanks to @elliechowns @libdemdavid and @catherine.fookes for meeting with us and to all those that travelled to the banks of the Thames to demand the health of our rivers is prioritised.

A week in Tanzania meeting parliamentarians from around the world and leading a cross-party UK delegation at the @ipu.parliament_official 153rd Assembly @bunge.tanzania

From climate change and inequality to the future of AI, we discussed the challenges facing our communities and exchanged views on how parliaments can best represent and serve the public.

I also visited a secondary school to learn more about UK-Tanzania partnerships supporting inclusive education for children with disabilities and special needs educational needs. Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, speaking on a podium

And that’s a wrap on Energy and Nature 2025/26. What a great scheme and a fantastic cohort!

We’re so grateful to all the organisations that welcomed our cohort and showed our MP’s the passion and expertise that goes into shaping our future.

From powering our homes, to protecting our landscapes and wildlife, energy and nature is massively important in shaping a better future.

Happy Monmouthshire Day.

Remembering the feast day of St Cadoc, the county’s patron saint.

Monmouthshire has been referenced in the House of Commons Chamber on more than 3,000 occasions. Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, holding the Monmouthshire flag with Catherine Fookes MP, with the Elizabeth Tower behind them.

Good to catch up with Community Union Members and Tata Steel at Llanwern again yesterday, with Catherine Fookes, Jayne Bryant and Ken Skates MS.

Steelmaking runs through the DNA of Newport East and, to this day, the steelworks at Llanwern remains of national importance, finishing world-class automotive and construction steel that is vital to our growing manufacturing sector and housebuilding industry.

This UK Labour Government recognises the importance of steelmaking at downstream sites such as Llanwern, and I’ll continue working with Ministers and Community Union to ensure that Newport East remains a steel-producing community for generations to come.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by the Monmouthshire Labour stall at Usk Show yesterday.

We had some great conversations about what’s happening in our communities, the work we’re doing across Monmouthshire and what you’d like to see change. It was good to see so much interest, with people asking questions, sharing ideas and finding out how to get involved.

Angela Sandles and John Crook were joined by our MP Catherine Fookes and Cllr Su McConnel. It was great to catch up with other councillors too, including Sara Burch, Dale Rooke, the Mayor of Chepstow and County Council Chair Tudor Thomas.

And, of course, there was plenty to enjoy at the show itself. A celebration of our farming communities, local food, businesses and rural life, Usk Show is one of the many things that make Monmouthshire such a special place to live.

Thank you to the organisers and volunteers for all the work that goes into bringing everyone together.

What a great day (and night) at the incredible @edenprojectcornwall

Project in Cornwall.

Our Energy and Nature cohort saw geothermal energy working at scale, met the teams behind Eden’s world class research on agriculture and biodiversity and saw nature based solutions being prescribed to support mental health and wellbeing.

Twenty five years on from a bold and brave idea to go big in a disused clay pit, Eden’s impact across Cornwall still endures. #parliamentknowledge #edenproject #pkf

When we are already seeing the impacts of climate change, it would be deeply irresponsible for governments to knowingly worsen climate impacts by allowing new oil and gas projects.

💬 Tag @andy.burnham in the comments and tell him to stop new drilling!!

Offshore and onshore with @plymouthmarinelab ,the Energy and Nature cohort saw how PML’s autonomous technology and marine research are building our picture of the ocean, what a changing climate means for the UK and why research at places like PML is critical to continuing to build our understanding of our seas.
