A look back at a few good hunts from last season before we get started again. We’re ready for another year. The countdown for the snow starts now.

Had a good opening morning of the second leg of the fall bear hunt, with a pretty funny story.

I let my dogs out to clean out for the morning and then put them on the truck to rig. About 80-100 yards after I put them up, they blow up barking, I corrected them a little because it seemed to quick and they’re amped up. I drive out of it, turn around and go back, and they hit it again and I knew it was legit. I drive past and shut them up to wait.

While I’m waiting for legal turn-out time and for Zach to get to me, five other hound rigs all in a line drive by and not one dog barks. When I saw them, I told them I had rigged a bear down the road and was just waiting to turn out. A guy I know had passed them and talked to them, then stopped and talked to me. He said they told him, “This guy up the road said he rigged a bear and is waiting to turn out. Ours didn’t rig, so it probably isn’t a bear.”

Well, 10–15 minutes later Zach pulls up, his all rig as well, and we ship the dogs. They catch this collared sow pretty quick down off in the canyon.

A couple points to this:

Those guys didn’t rig at all, which can happen to any of us. I’ve been there plenty of times too and it could happen to me tomorrow.

But don’t assume that because your dogs didn’t rig, there wasn’t a bear there too.

Sometimes the bear is there and the dogs just don’t hit it. That’s bear hunting.

I’ve been working on an album project all about the backcountry and life out west. That wouldn’t be complete without a song about hunting cats. More to come soon….stay tuned. #Backcountry #Hunting #Cowboys #Songwriting #Western

Calling mountain lions takes persistence, patience, and a dedication to becoming the ultimate hunter. You have to stay tight to your location, read the terrain, and put in the work for that one hard-earned chance at harvesting a mountain lion.
