*The following is definitions in terms of simple specifics as well as my defined expectations for students.*

‘A’ enter collected canter.

Dressage/dressuer:
At a glance; in French translates as ‘to train’, and today modernly referred to as a specific riding discipline. You can, for example; dressuer a dog, horse, cow etcetera. Dressage in historical equine reference; we may think of skilled horses used in battle, where strategic precise movements were inspired and refined from observing horses at play, thus we utilize natural ability.

‘X’ Halt Salute. Proceed collected trot.

As its classic discipline today, dressage is a series of levels+subset of tests; training level to Grand Prix. Marks are scored from 0-10 on the basis of execution, more difficult movements multiply by a coefficient 2. Further score merits derive from:
-gaits (freedom, regularity),
-impulsion (forwardness, elasticity, suppleness of the back, engagement of hindquarters)
-submission (harmony/willingness/straightness, etc)
-riders (position/seat and correct/effective use of aids with undo force).
Remember, there are No verbal commands allowed in this version of equine sport; that will dock a movement two points. The ride score is totaled and divided by the possible points per the movements in the test for a percentage score. Don’t let all that overwhelm you in this glance at dressage scoring, merely having insight of the expected parameters help set the tone of what is to be achieved in training, therefore we have our scope and targets.

‘HXF’ change rein, extended trot.

Haute École:
High school, but not in the modern [k-12] sense, rather to ride at High level marks, prestige. High standards with precision execution. Mastery of whatever the desired ‘discipline’ you wish to emulate. This is the light in which we must ride. As I see it, mastery without claiming to be an expert, for we never stop learning when in presence of a horse.

‘I’ Pirouette to the right.

Beginning training stages and show levels, one must embrace trial and error, small wins, repetition, discipline to show up again and again every ride. Ten steps forward-6 steps back, use failures to move ahead and so on.

Series One; Part 1: Mindset
First let us be honest with ourselves; at some point in our riding journey we get so ambitious for progress we can over push our horses ability and ours. You will be okay. Your horse will be okay.

Con: backwards progress, frustration, injury to horse, sour to riding.
Pro: opportunity to stay mindful, learn our limits, find tools along the way.

-Okay so we want to do all the party tricks right fricken now but know we have to work up to it…

Understand your horse’s conformation and the potential it provides and it’s limits-just like dogs, horses have been bred for specific utility. That’s not to say there aren’t special cases, we’ve seen them. (I could go on to specifics but best to leave it to real time scenarios).

-Be realistic but optimistic

Give them and yourself the grace to fail. You both are learning (even if you have done it on another horse-each one is different, each day is different). I find it best to giggle while the brain cells are rubbing together teaching new movements-we are trying to get the horse’s brain and muscles to work together! That’s not a small feat!

-Allowed or controlled failure; builds trust and resilience in your riding bonds and boosts your horses tenacity:

Along the way you will learn where likely failures will happen and how. As a result, the know-how to set them up for a failed movement ie you’re there ready to redirect a controlled failure so they learn what is expected sooner and don’t over commit to the wrong output. (Saving energy reserves)

Additionally, be honest with your horse as the rider. Did your horse fail a movement attempt or did you as the rider fail to prepare for the movement, fail your timing going into the movement, reached your physical limit, or simply cued incorrectly. Apologize, take a breath, reset, start again.

Series One: Intro
Follow along for the analytical and mindful perspectives on creating a horse that can dance in the ring gracefully with the right amount of bodybuilder strength to support the grace.
*The strength of the horse is limited to the fitness of the rider in body and mind.
*The riding discipline doesn’t matter, working with a horse in a manner to support its abilities and ultimate fitness does.

Let’s work on the pizazz (strength) behind the scenes and get that show audience in tears from ‘feeling something’ while watching you utilize mind, body, and soul of both parties (mindfulness) via the seamless extension through the horse.

I hope to touch on aspects in each of these topics further yet also leave room for interpretation- it’s never a one size fits all where we are going…

No particular sequence necessarily; to come:

-Mindsets/perspectives
-Physiology (equine exercise science perspectives and -parallels of riding)
-Movements, the party tricks and some basic tools
-Do physics (I know you’re excited!)
-Goals vs relativity
-?
-sometimes sh*t happens: injury/rehab vs reality

The Sky is not the limit, it’s the starting point. And I’m just getting started 🤍

Everything you set your mind to…you get, so set your mind to good things🦄⚡️🤍👩🏼‍🏭🐎🚁
I’ve been told more times than I can count, ‘no you can’t be a welder/builder/farm/do horse stuff/And fly helicopters’ well it might be a mess sometimes but I’m doing it.
The best thing anyone has ever said to me is ‘you can’t’…

So trust, chances are, you absolutely fkn can…whatever it is.🤍

William was the horse I learned every game changing lessons with. A Grand Prix school master with some special needs. First had ulcers to solve he had two colic surgeries before I bought him and a year of diet changes we found what worked. I’m happy to say it was keeping it simple; damp hay, 5lbs beet pulp mash, joint supplements=happy gut, beautiful topline, coat and better mental space.
Starting with a more let’s say traditional style of US dressage it was tug of war more often than not. I don’t know about you but a 1300lb horse always wins that battle and I found myself not enjoying dressage so much even on Mr. Fancy pants.
At a show three years in with him, his ligament to his hip from his sacrum tore…his ‘butt cheek’ was literally detached from his hip. Speculation with a few vets it was a long period of micro tears and probably him being a zealous horse in the pasture.
What did this mean?
.
6 mo stall rest
Min 3 mo inhand work (5min’10min,30min etc once a day then twice a day)
Gradually adding lunge line, then under saddle…
Besides that advice -year of HA injections and a banger joint supplement other wise ‘good luck’ -vet advice. Not super helpful for rehabilitation exercise.
Well…going from 6 days a week sometimes 2x day exercise and 4 legged athlete with an opinion that knows he’s big…there’s that fun psychological end too to manage.

First off this guy had never really got to be a horse far as I could tell, we solved that. Stall rest and in hand grazing (protecting the horse from being a horse.if you know you know)..eventually a human teaching a horse how to be a horse, it still makes me laugh but he went from not liking people to whiny seeing you and solo trail rides. Psychological side met. (Much more to it)

The injury was a setback but a blessing in disguise. I took him to school with me to work with him every day then in the second year of rehab I retrained both of us in ‘French Style’ Dressage. Now talk about a mind scramble for both of us. Telling a horse everything you knew before was the wrong way, well there was some frustrating moments and hilarious moments. I still remember the moment his light bulb went off and from there he was….
