Excited to share that construction of Punkshell starts today!

Punkshell is a pavilion built from 3mm plywood, cut flat and bent into shape. The panels are joined with zip ties alone — no frame, no adhesive. Forcing a flat sheet into a curve introduces internal stresses that the material resists, and that resistance is the structure. It stands without external support and carries the weight of a person.

Over the past months we ran a series of one-to-one scale mockups at the Fabrication Center at the IIT School of Architecture @fabricationcenter whose support has been immense and is deeply appreciated. Today, with our local fabricator @izmade , assembly of the full structure begins.
Punkshell is one of the pavilions selected for exhibition at the IASS-IWSS 2026 @iass.iwss.2026 International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures, held in Torino, Italy, September 15–18.

This research project was made possible through funding from the IIT School of Architecture @illinoistecharchitecture and the Huckabee College of Architecture at Texas Tech University @ttuhcoa

Thrilled to be bringing this to life alongside my life friends and stellar architects @catwilmes and @arkiv.kim (I wish I can be there for the tilt-up)

Deeply grateful to all who helped, advise and supported us!

If you're in Torino, swing by!

Small scale category Honorable mention winners #BuildnersUnbuiltAward2025 competition #ArchitectureCompetition Catherine Marielle Wilmes and Eduardo Cilleruelo Teran from United States!

Why do you enter architecture competition?
-
Competitions offer space for speculation—a chance to test ideas without the immediate constraints of client approval or regulatory frameworks. They allow us to explore material behaviors and construction methods that might seem unconventional within typical practice. For Playwood specifically, the competition format provided an opportunity to challenge the industry's relationship with "defective" materials. The project asks: what if we built with what's discarded rather than perfected? Competitions let designers ask these questions publicly and materially, turning propositions into tangible prototypes that can circulate, provoke, and inform future work.

A West Story: Atlas of Common and Civic Infrastructure studies the boundary where atmosphere, site, and mechanics meet—and how that overlap becomes a design language for the American West. This semester, I'm thrilled to share Objects of Time and Place, as our own mini-lecture series for second-year studio.

This series ambitions to visualize the essence of work, in which the intersection of global questions meets an evolving territory, a new geography of architecture practices, designers and researchers. Architecture becomes a language for a dialogue between processes rather than an immovable stone. Our fimitas is in progress and the gravitas is shifting rapidly. As part of the interrogation between territory and space in second-year studio, we welcome these amazing voices to join us in our semester’s investigations at @ttuhcoa

Thank you @bangkoktokyoarchitecture @salazarsequeromedina @catwilmes @joseluisuribeortiz @jonisstillunavailable @pablocastilloluna

Thanks to Huckabee College of Architecture and the collaboration of the second-year teaching team, along with our great teaching assistants.

Just a month!—take a look!

We kicked off the semester with hundreds of small drawings and paper models, abstracting material processes—with the amazing first-year studio team. Among many other interesting events, we had the privilege of talking with @liam_y on futurities, data centers and the frontline of architecture. Following this, it was quite fantastic to see the work of @felix.heisel and how global scale research interlocks with practice and construction thinking. Great lectures!—also, it was very inspirational to see the work of @adamframpton and @karolinaczeczek
