🤿 TECHNICAL DIVING: HOW MUCH REDUNDANCY IS ENOUGH?

When the dive gets deeper, longer or more complex, redundancy becomes a fundamental part of the plan.

Backup gas. Backup computers. Backup lights. Backup regulators. Bailout.

But technical diving is not simply about carrying more kit.

It is about having the right equipment, the right configuration, the right training — and being prepared to use it when you need it.

How much redundancy do you build into your dives? 👇

Just recently it was UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst, on Sunday
September 13.

A global day dedicated to education, conservation, and public awareness.

Find out more about this event here 🌍👉https://www.caveskarstday.org/🌍

Celebrate and Protect the World’s Karst Systems
The UNESCO International Day of Caves and Karst (IDCK) is an annual observance on 13 September, dedicated to raising global awareness of caves and karst landscapes. Caves are naturally formed underground voids found worldwide, while karst landscapes form through the dissolution of soluble rocks, shaping distinctive surface and subsurface features. These environments provide vital resources, including drinking water for over a billion people, preserve unique biodiversity, and hold invaluable geological and cultural records.

If you didn’t know, make a diary note for next year!🗓️

Episode 234 Autumn Blum Stream2Sea
In this episode of The BiG Scuba Podcast, Gemma and Ian catch up with a former guest, Autum Blum. She is the founder of Stream2Sea and a passionate diver, cosmetic chemist and ocean advocate.

Autumn shares the story behind Stream2Sea and the moment a dive in Palau made her question what we were putting into our oceans through sunscreens, shampoos and personal care products.

We chat about reef-safe claims, aquatic toxicity, marine-friendly ingredients, sustainable packaging and why reading the ingredients on your sunscreen really matters. Autumn also talks about her passion for diving, shark diving, technical diving, the Women Divers Hall of Fame and her hopes to experience UK cold-water diving.
A fascinating conversation about diving, science and protecting the water we love.

Whether you are already a diver, a keen snorkeler or simply curious about exploring beneath the surface, this episode is packed with inspiration and a reminder of why we love the ocean and the amazing community that surrounds it.

The hike down (and up!) the pebbles was 100% worth it on Sunday at Chesil Beach! 🌊🤿

Swipe through to see the contrast between gear prep on the beach and what was waiting for us under the surface! 📸👇

Chesil always delivers something dynamic, but we want to know... And super lovely to share the dive with our friends Dave and Andy and BiG thank you to Jess for being our shore cover.

🤔 Question for you: What’s the single best marine life encounter or wreck find you’ve ever had off Chesil Beach/Cove? Or if you haven’t dived it yet, is it on your UK bucket list? Drop it in the comments! 💬

🎧 Want to hear the full story, condition reports, and dive banter from our weekend setup? Catch up on the latest episode of The BiG Scuba Podcast — link in bio / search us on your favorite podcast app! Two Episodes out on Monday 31 August!

Three days. Six dives. And plenty of incredible marine life along the way! 🦞🦀🦭🐬

We explore Northern Hares, Longstone Gullys, Blue Caps, The Hopper and Gun Rock, encounter lobsters, crabs, seals, puffins and a porpoise, and chat about the conditions, currents, our brilliant skipper Ron and some of the highlights – and challenges – of the trip.

It was a fantastic weekend of UK diving and we reckon it could be our best Farne Islands trip yet!

🦈 July 14 – Shark Awareness Day 🦈

Sharks have patrolled our oceans for over 400 million years, yet they're still one of the most misunderstood animals on our planet.

Ask almost any scuba diver who's been lucky enough to encounter a shark underwater, and you'll hear the same thing... not fear, but absolute awe. Graceful, curious and vital to the health of our oceans, sharks are the guardians of healthy marine ecosystems.

Whether you're a diver, freediver, snorkeller, sailor, paddleboarder or simply someone who loves the sea, Shark Awareness Day is a reminder that protecting sharks means protecting the oceans we all depend on.

🎙️ At The BiG Scuba Podcast, we bring you the stories of the people exploring, protecting and celebrating our blue planet. If sharks, marine life, ocean adventures and conservation inspire you, then you're in the right place.
