Waitrose Loved & Found Loin de L’Oeil 2021 • I have absolute appreciation for the Loved & Found range because I have, one again, found another variety to love. In the southwest of France, there exists an appellation called Gaillac where the winemakers craft white blends with Loin de L’Oeil (aka Len de l’El - “far from the eye”). The variety is named after the shape of its bunches which hang low below the buds - the “eye.” Loin de L’oeil is, near enough, exclusively grown in southwest France and features in many of the appellations white wines styles, often being blended with Mauzac. • 100% Loin de L’Oeil Gaillac AOP Faenza region, Apennine foothills Machine harvested Lees aging in Stainless steel • Pale lemon to the eye and medium intensity on the nose. Aromas of acacia flowers provide perfume, supported by additional notes elderflower and orange blossom. Bright lemon leans into apple, pear and peach - apricot ushers in tangy tangerine, mango and kiwi - a thread of coriander weaves through the fruit and creates more gastronomic possibilities. Medium acidity keeps things agreeably bright, medium alcohol and flavour intensity maintain that approachability. Body is medium (-) which I quite like in aromatic wines, particularly in warm weather.
