A wonderful evening attending the premiere of Sky Arts’ new documentary, The Handel Scandal.

It was a pleasure to discover the story behind this fascinating new film, with a brilliant presentation, beautiful live performances of Handel’s music and the opportunity to hear more about the making of the documentary.

A really enjoyable evening, and a fascinating look at the stories behind the music. The Handel Scandal airs on Sky Arts from 27 October.

Thank you to @tvnaga, @danielledenieseofficial, @factoryfilmsuk and @hellosky for such a memorable evening!

On Monday night, I had the pleasure of attending the brilliant premiere of Sky Arts’ new documentary, The Handel Scandal.

The documentary explores the extraordinary story of Susannah Cibber, whose life and reputation were engulfed by a very public scandal, and how she came to sing in the first performance of Handel’s Messiah in Dublin in 1742.

Discovering Susannah’s story has genuinely changed my perspective on this extraordinary masterpiece. Knowing what she had endured, and the determination and desperation with which she fought to rebuild her career, brings a profoundly personal dimension to the music she performed. In particular, hearing “He Was Despised” through the lens of her own experiences of public humiliation and rejection makes the aria all the more moving. It is impossible not to wonder how those words must have resonated with her, and how her performance may have helped restore her reputation and reclaim her place on the stage.

It’s fascinating to discover the human story behind a work we think we know so well, and how understanding the life of the person performing it can change the way we hear the music forever.

A huge thank you to @tvnaga for the interview, @danielledenieseofficial for presenting and performing the beautiful arias within the documentary, director Lisa Fairbank, executive producer Julie Heathcote, and everyone at Sky Arts and Factory Films for bringing this remarkable story to life. @factoryfilmsuk @hellosky

The Handel Scandal airs on Sky Arts from 27 October. Absolutely fascinating — do watch it. You may never hear Handel’s Messiah in quite the same way again. ✨

Why are we so drawn to tragedy in history? 👀

Historian and creator @caybluestocking talks about the way tragedy can become sensationalised in the history community, and finding the balance between telling those stories and simply making people laugh.

Because history doesn’t always have to be serious. 🎙️
