🩷 Friday Flat Lay 🩷

A few weeks ago, the lovely @pekoesbooknook tagged me in my autumn TBR. I don’t actually have many autumn/spooky books so instead I’m doing Ten Books Before the End 💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♀️

The Specialist - Ben Giles
Bought this one at @bloodyscotland after listening to him chat about it

59 Minutes - @hollyseddonauthor
This is one of the books I set out to definitely read this year

The Makoto Murders - @richard_jerram
I was kindly gifted this one by @sarahisreadingagain

The Domino Man - @helenjauthor
I won @thefirstelevenminutes giveaway the other day and I have saw a lot of good things about this one

The Vinyl Detective - @vinyldetectivelondon
A new series to start when I have lots of books on my TBR? Absolutely yes please

Count The Dead - @tmpayneauthor
Another one I set out to definitely read this year. I’ve seen a lot of good things about this series

Partners in Crime - @elsiemarksauthor
Loved Hitwoman and I want to find out what happens next

Some Of Us Are Liars - @fionacumminsauthor
A new author for me, but it feels like it will be right up my street

How To Cheat Your Own Death - @kristenperrinwrites
3rd book in the Castle Knoll series. I need to find out what happens to Annie

The Trad Wife - @carriehughesbooks
Absolutely loved The Woman From Bookclub so can’t wait to read this one

I have about 120 books on my TBR pile and I want to read all of them 😂😂

Does anyone have any “definite reads” this year or are you all mood readers? I’ve tagged a few people to either showcase their autumn TBR or Ten Before The End, but as always no pressure 🥰

I’m excited to see what comes next, with the colder nights coming in, I hope to be curled up on the couch reading more but you never know 🤞🏻🤞🏻

💙💛 Every book tour has its final page... and today we close the chapter on The Home Swap by A.A. Chaudhuri!

💙 @caz.readz "The pacing is spot in with the short chapters and multiple twists, making it difficult to put down. Just when you think you have worked everything out, another surprise changes the direction of the story."

💛 @sonia.coffee.read.repeat "I found the concept of a home swap - with each family member being watched and manipulated in different ways - quite unsettling. It definitely gave the whole story an eerie, uncomfortable feel."

💙 @book_a_holic_17 "I made the mistake of starting this in the afternoon and then being totally hooked, unable to put it down and then finishing this late into the evening! Alone!"

💛 @Sue.wallace1974 "what a twist. I loved the writing style and the story. Oh my gosh. The ending."

💙 @redhead_reviews1 "I really liked that Chaudhuri gradually builds a feeling of unease rather than dramatic shocks. As the story progresses, so does the feeling of claustrophobia, leaving me to query what was really happening."

🖤 October scavenger hunt 🖤

I always love @nothing.beats.a.good.book scavenger hunts and what a great challenge 💁🏻‍♀️

🎶 optional - sting will be 75 on 2nd October, so feel free to use a sting song. I don’t actually know many sting songs 🙊😂

‘O’ a book title starting with O for October (no the) (or a book with 10 in the title):
Out of Time - @joditaylorbooks (TBR)
This was kindly sent to me by @headlinebooks

🩷 a pink book for Breast Cancer Awareness month:
Motherfaker - @annabrookmitchell (TBR)

🐻 a book with an animal on the cover for World Animal Day on 4th:
The Vinyl Detective - @vinyldetectivelondon (TBR)

👀 a book with eyes on the cover for World Sight Day on 13th:
The Perfect Psychopath - @alicehunter_author

⏳ a book set back in time for the clocks going back on 25th:
A Fatal Crossing - @tom.hindle

🎃 a book with a Halloween theme (or orange cover) for Halloween on 31st:
Sometimes I Scare Myself - @jenevaroseauthor (TBR)
Thank you to @tandemcollectiveuk @simonschusteruk and @likely_suspects for sending me this book. Look out for my review on 13th 💁🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♀️

Did you know that in Kilmarnock in Scotland, Halloween is always celebrated the last Friday in October, regardless if the nearest Friday is in November. When I was younger a lot of folk would celebrate Killie-ween on the last Friday, then on actual Halloween they would go to the next town and trick-or-treat there 😂😂
Does anyone else know any weird traditions for Halloween?

I’ve tagged a few people to have a go but as always there’s no pressure 🥰

Bloody Scotland Day 3

What the perfect end to a perfect weekend!

Arrived in the press room and met Kate Foster, Luca Veste and Kathryn Sharman.

Started the morning with a panel of Private Investigations with Leye Adenle, Heather Critchlow and Chris Mcdonald. It was absolutely fascinating and so inspiring for any aspiring authors. Whilst there I also met Harriet Tyce at the book shop.

Then back to the press room and was lucky enough to meet Ardal O Hanlon before his panel and then me and @caz.readz sprinted to the queue for the sold out panel with the cast of Dept Q. Both were insightful and hilarious in equal measures. Then the wonderful Matthew Goode stayed behind and I managed to get a selfie and quick chat...day made!

At both of the panels at Albert Halls I also saw the brilliant crime in the spotlight authors Kathryn Sharman and Ailson Aitchison, both of which tempted me to add their books to my tbr.

Finally back to the press room for one last time to chill, chat with @dawngeddeswrites to find out how the weekend had gone as a whole and an added bonus was to meet Julie Cohen whose books I have read for years and was great to chat with.

Thank you @bloodyscotland for a fantastic weekend from start to finish. I always look forward to it every year but it is so much fun and jam packed with panels and authors that it seems to go in a blink of an eye!

Any Dept Q fans? Can't wait for Season 2!

First Time At Bloody Scotland? 🔍

Here’s your ultimate beginner’s guide to Scotland’s International Crime Writing Festival from a newbie!

➡️ Swipe for the LD

AD: thanks to @bloodyscotland for inviting me to my first festival!

Get to Stirling and fuel up ☕️

Arrive early (either for the day or weekend) and grab a fresh brew from one of many of Stirling’s indie coffee shops before your first panel.

Starting the day relaxed gives you time to pick up your festival tickets and check your schedule/plan for the day.

Mix heavy hitters with ‘spotlight’ talent 📚

See icons but also pay attention to “Crime in the Spotlight” - short showcase readings from rising stars right before main events.

First-timer tip: Book your headline tickets in advance as popular panels sell out fast!

But you will be spoilt for choice, so the tip here is to pace yourself and don’t book back to back panels all day every day!

Pick out a few “must-see” events then leave everything else to how you feel in the day, this is where you will stumble across new authors - absolute gems!

Meet fave authors in the wild 🤩

No celebrity velvet ropes here! One of the best things about @bloodyscotland is how approachable the authors are.

You’ll regularly spot literary legends grabbing a coffee, walking between venues, or hanging out in the hotel 🙌🏻

Authors are happy to sign your books or snap a quick selfie between panels.

First-timer tip: Keep 1-2 books of your fave authors (and a good pen!) handy at all times because you’ll never know who you’ll bump into in Stirling!

Flying solo or coming with a buddy? Either way, you’re in good company!

Bloody Scotland is famous for being one of the friendliest, most welcoming festivals around and I can now confirm it!

First-timer tip: Don’t be afraid to ask the person next to you in line what they are reading or who they are most excited to see - queue chats are the best!

Don’t forget to explore the historic setting of the festival - Stirling 🏰

Venues like the Albert Halls and Church of the Holy Rude are stunning and all within walking distance.

Take a break between panels to wander the old town and its historic buildings.
