🚵 3 exercises every mountain biker should have in their training program.

The goal isn’t just to get stronger in the gym. It’s to build strength that transfers to the trail.

That’s where the SAID principle comes in: Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands. The more your training prepares you for the demands of your sport, the more relevant that strength can be.

All three of these exercises train the hinge, arguably one of the most important positions in mountain biking. 👇

1️⃣ B-Stance Romanian Deadlift (RDL)
My favorite exercise for building the hinge! It closely resembles the athletic position we use on the bike while strengthening the glutes, hamstrings, and erector spinae.

🍑 Fun fact: The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in the human body. Let’s put that engine to work!

2️⃣ Bent-Over Row
This exercise builds strength in your lats, posterior deltoids, and erector spinae while challenging your ability to maintain a stable hinge position. With a single-arm variation, your opposite side must resist rotation, adding another challenge for trunk and shoulder stability.

3️⃣ Kettlebell Swings
Think of this as an explosive hinge. You’re training the glutes and hamstrings to produce force quickly—an important quality for powerful accelerations and dynamic movements on the bike.

Save this for your next gym session!

26’ PFU race reflection
I always think about this race long after it’s over:) Its hard not to. What an awesome day we had on the trails! The initial weather threat had me worried but overcoming that initial challenge set the tone for the whole day!

Standing at the finish line watching rider after rider roll in-muddy, caked in dirt, exhausted, and triumphant from overcoming- I felt extremely grateful! It reminded me why we pour our hearts into putting on this race year after year😁

To every single amazing competitor who lined up for the 2026 Pocatello Fall Ultra: Thank you!

MTB racing at all levels is sooo hard! Its more than just strong legs and bike handling; it tests the absolute limits of physical strength and mental focus. Over thousands of feet of brutal climbing, smile inducing descents and technical single-track, every one of you conquered burning muscles, mechanicals, doubt, and those dark moments of pure frustration when the trail refused to give an inch. Getting to see you fight through fatigue, and push past your limits is deeply fulfilling for our entire crew.

This race has always been and will always be—about people:) Long after the race is over and the bikes are put away, it’s the community, the shared struggles, and the lifelong human connections that define this event❤️ We will always put people and the racer experience at the absolute forefront of everything we do. We strive to make every racer feel supported from the moment you show up in Poky to the second you cross that finish and even if you don’t!

To those who set PRs, stood on podiums, those who conquered their very first race, and those who gave every ounce of effort out on the course but finishing wasn’t to be! We are grateful for and celebrate you👊

A massive thank you to our tireless volunteers, trail work crews, sponsors and the families and friends who cheered non-stop. Your energy is vital and kept your riders pushing.

What an amazing year we had at the 2026 Poky Fall Ultra! Thank you so much for coming! Keep being awesome, keep pushing, keep climbing and carry the positive momentum from this year’s race into your life! You earned every single mile!💪
See you in 2027!

One exercise I think almost every cyclist could benefit from is the Press-up. 🚴

I’ve worked in healthcare for over 4 years and have spent a lot of time studying the spine. One thing I’ve learned is that the human spine doesn’t love being stuck in one position for long periods of time.

And cycling is just that...

Cyclists can spend hours in a relatively flexed position, especially through the lumbar spine.

Now, I’m not going to tell you to stop riding your bike—that would be outrageous.

Instead, I like to focus on management strategies that help counterbalance the demands of the sport.

That’s where the press-up comes in.

The press-up repeatedly moves the spine into extension, providing a movement that counterbalances the prolonged flexed position we spend so much time in on the bike.

In the video, I demonstrate a simple way I test the effectiveness of this exercise:

➡️ First, I assess your baseline mobility using a toe touch.
➡️ Perform 10 press-ups.
➡️ Retest your toe touch.

Often, riders will notice an improvement in their mobility or that the movement simply feels easier after performing the press-ups.

But remember: this is a tool, not an absolute.

A change in your toe touch doesn't automatically mean something was "out of place," and a lack of change doesn't mean the exercise isn't useful. We are simply looking at how your body responds to this movement.

If you respond well to this exercise, try 1 set of 10 repititions intermittently throughout the day, especially on days you spend a lot of time riding.

Disclaimer: This is general education and is not intended to diagnose or treat pain or injury. If you have questions or concerns, talk to a qualified healthcare professional.

What movement helps you feel better after a long ride?

Aim With Everything 🎯
