WHY IS THE IMPORTANT TO ME?

Iya/Dr. Marta Moreno Vega, the Afro-Puerto Rican scholar/priest who founded CCCADI, was not only my first Madrina/godmother in the tradition, who was the first person to put elekes on me, she was also my mentor and boss during my tenure as a young curator in New York City. Marta took me under her wing, brought me to places with her like Cuba and Loiza, Puerto Rico, and gave me free reign to explore my theoretical and Diasporic interests through the contemporary art exhibitions and public programs that I curated at CCCADI. It was there that I explored themes of Divine Femininity in African Sacred Traditions, Haitian Vodou, Post-Katrina New Orleans, the Contemporary Black South, What Connects as a Diaspora and so much more. My time at CCCADI set the institutional precedence for what later would become BEAUCOUP HOODOO.

As we celebrate 5 years as a TRIBE and countdown to the 5TH ANNUAL BEAUCOUP HOODOO FEST in New Orleans next March, I am proudly joining so many of my elders and peers in lifting up the institution that was founded by a Black woman who envisioned bringing Black people together from across the Diaspora, in efforts to connect Black people across the Atlantic and most importantly, to CELEBRATE OUR AFRICAN SACRED TRADITIONS.

Fifty years of centering African Diasporic culture, community, and sacred traditions! Celebrate CCCADI’s 50th anniversary with Violines Para Ochún, a musical and spiritual production tracing connections from Africa to Cuba to New York City.
Under the musical direction of Louis Bauzó, an intergenerational cast of musicians, dancers, and practitioners honors the elders who sustained these traditions and the generations carrying them forward. The production also revisits CCCADI’s Oshun Festival series of the 1980s and ’90s.

Culture is power. 🐚

Had the opportunity to design this pop-up storytelling installation for @cccadi’s 50th year at the @brooklynbrujeria Festival. I pulled directly from CCCADI archives and documentation to highlight 50 years of drum, altar, and our culture bearers, wrapped in cowries and gold.

Been working all year on the design language for CCCADI’s 50th Storytelling and grateful to get to design and produce this community engagement piece that incorporates all the design work built from the CCCADI archives.

Gracias @chiquitabrujita for providing space🙏🏽 & @mario_ruben_ for helping build this out.

Nerdy. Caribbean. Gay. My hips don’t lie. 🇩🇴💓

I learned so much about the history of carnival in the Caribbean at Jab, J’ouvert, Revelry & Resistance by @knowyourcaribbean at @cccadi (🥳). I loved all of the news clippings showing how they tried to ban gathering during colonialism, but we still resisted.

The exhibit is 🆓, and it can be perfect for an after-work outing on Wednesday evenings when it is open until 8 pm.

Hours:
• Tuesday: 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
• Wednesday: 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM
• Thursday: 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
• Friday – Monday: Closed (available by appointment or for special scheduled events; at least one Saturday per month you can find them open)

They came to learn the bois. They left speaking about something deeper than a stick fight.

This reel gathers Kalinda workshops from Trinidad to the diaspora, along with voices from cultural leaders who stood in the circle with us:

Melody Capote, Director of CCCADI (Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute) @cccadi

Keiron Sargeant, head of KDS Dance Company @kdsdancefoundationtt

Hollis King, head of The Billie Holiday Theatre @king.hollis.mr

Kalinda was born as resistance in the barrack yards of Trinidad, carried by drum, chant and footwork. Our ancestors built the gayelle so a people could remember who they were. Each workshop opens that space again, in a new city with new hands holding the bois.

Where should the gayelle open next?
