Congratulations to Kathy Burns of CCE Onondaga County, who received the Women in Agriculture Friend of the Fair Award today at The Great New York State Fair!

Kathy leads the Voice of the Farmer Garden on the State Fairgrounds, where fairgoers can see growing crops and learn what really goes into producing our food, successes, challenges, and all.

The award recognizes Kathy’s work bringing CCE’s educational mission to life at one of New York state’s largest public gatherings, and helping people better understand where their food comes from.

Thanks to the @cornelluniversity Chronicle for this deep dive article on MeatSuite’s bulk meat directory and our new Meat Math Wizard tool. The new Wizard helps local meat buyers understand bulk meat purchasing — including how much meat they’ll receive, what it will cost and how many meals it will provide for their family.

In the words of MeatSuite’s creator Matt LeRoux, “When COVID hit, the shelves were bare, there was no meat, but the local farmers had it. A local food system is like a muscle: The more you use it, the stronger it is. And if you want the muscle strong when you need it, you should use it all the time.”

Shoutout to the New York MeatSuite farmer’s included in the article: Gridley’s Cold Spring Beef Farm, @bottomlandfarm and @kinderhookfarm.

Ten-year-old Evie and her horse, Cinnamon, took on the Working Hunter Division at the The Great New York State Fair and came away with first- and second-place ribbons.

The Onondaga County 4-H’er shares what it’s like to compete over jumps at the State Fair and why success depends on knowing your horse and moving together as a team.

Headed to the Fair this week? Don’t miss the 4-H competitions, exhibits and demonstrations happening throughout the fairgrounds.

Great group of Onondaga County Master Gardeners out to learn about Go native! Perennials, our work on site, in yards and landscapes, how we collect seeds and prepare them for germination, and insect relationships with the plants we grow. Janice, Val and Kara enjoyed all of you! GNP and Limeledge welcome you back anytime for more!!

Much like a moth this area is going through a transformation. We are creating a cocoon of cardboard and mulch overtop of the area that was covered in invasive grasses. After one to two months of the old vegetation being destroyed, we will plant native plants into the mulch/cardboard to complete the metamorphosis to a native wildflower garden. This is just one of many methods that we use to transition grassy fields of invasive plants into vibrant native meadows that support pollinators and the entire ecosystem. Stop by our greenhouse to see these methods in action and pick out some plants for your next garden project!

We were excited to once again host the
CCE Onondaga @cce_onondaga 5th Grade Dairy Field Trip at our farm last week! This was the third time we’ve had the opportunity to welcome this event, and we always enjoy sharing what we do with the next generation. 👏🏻

About 180 fifth graders from area schools spent the day rotating through stations where they learned about dairy nutrition, calves, and the many dairy products we enjoy every day. 🐄

Students also hopped on wagons for a guided tour around the farm, where they got an up-close look at our freestall barns, calving barn, feed center, and manure storage lagoons while learning how each plays an important role in caring for our cows and producing milk.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the day possible! We love opening our doors and giving students a chance to see firsthand where their food comes from. 🙌🏻

Check out this massive volunteer tree planting from Central New York! More than 160 volunteers from 25 partner organizations joined the CNY Land Trust to plant 3,500 native trees on an old farm above Skaneateles Lake, the main drinking water source for 200,000 people in the Syracuse area. Native tree species included River Birches, Swamp White Oaks, Red Maples, Sugar Maples, Silver Maples, Sycamores, White Oaks, and Tulip Poplars.

Trees were selected with help from ‪The Nature Conservancy and purchased through Onondaga County Soil and Water’s annual bare root tree sale, which offers an affordable and easy way for the public to order trees each year.
