🎧 On the newest episode of “Voices + Visions: The Podcast,” we focus on featuring our 2022 Mentorship Artist-in-Residence, CC Paschal.

Voices + Visions is an artist talk series featuring Indigo Arts Alliance’s alumni artists in residence, highlighting their creative intersections, distinct voices and their residency experience.

An experimental documentarian and multidisciplinary artist, Pascal dedicated her time at IAA to working on the development of a narrative podcast series, blending speculative fiction with facts. Paschal also explored work around the Abyssinian Church in Portland, ME, and the intersections between coiled hair and sound waves.

Proud big sister moment! Congratulations @ccpaschal on producing the 30 minute audio guide for Toward Joy: New Frameworks for American Art!

Witnessing you research, write, direct, and edit this one of a kind immersive experience alongside @ssparlingwilliams and the rest of the curatorial team at the @brooklynmuseum has definitely been the highlight of my year💜🙌🏾🔥

The way you continue to show up for yourself and others despite grappling with a traumatic brain injury is ever awe-inspiring...

And, as you continue to move forward in your healing journey, I pray you continue to receive all the love, joy grace, and abundance you so freely give to others. #towardjoy #ccpaschal #brooklynmuseum

We are still vibrating from this weekend’s transformative multi-site project of E C H O E S under the Seeking Resonance program. On behalf of @indigoartsalliance and @portland_ovations we send our most heartfelt thanks to all attendees who were in community with us the entire day; [Eastern Cemetery; Indigo Arts Alliance and the Abyssinian Meeting House].

We are all still reveling from the #BlackBrilliance of the artists, their music, words, and movement. We are grateful for our community collaborators at the Abyssinian Meeting House and the Prince Project, as well as our generous funders — Coffee By Design, New England Foundation for the Arts, UNUM, Onion Foundation, Center for Cultural Exchange Foundation, Alice Ditson Fund of Columbia University and the Robert and Dorothy Goldberg Foundation – that made E C H O E S possible.

Special thanks to the teams at IAA and Ovations who set the stage and so much more. To the E C H O E S artists: Daniel Bernard Roumain, Brian J. Evans, CC Paschal, Nyamuon (Moon) Nguany Machar, Genius Black, Samuel James, Maya Williams, and Veeva Banga; thank you for igniting in us the fire to provoke change in our own artistic ways. You are a gift to our community!

As we ended the night in front of the Abyssinian House we truly hope that you are moved to continue to “meet” your neighbors at the intersections of art and social justice. The reverberations of E C H O E S can continue by visiting the E C H O E S webpage, which lives on with added images, video and resources – as together we come to better understand the complexity, joy and resilience of Black life in Portland, past, present and future.

“Everything living bends towards the light”, as spoken by the father of Black, Haitian-American composer @DanielRoumain’s. So hauntingly true. Much gratitude for DBR, @Moon_Nguany, @Antenious BrianJ.Evans, CCPaschal, @VeevaBanga, @blamueljames Samuel James, @emmdubb16 Maya Willams and @RealGeniusBlack for their light-filled performance of Echoes - Stories & Songs Across Time. The historic @Abyssininan_Meeting_House, the third-oldest African-American building in the country, provided DBR with the inspiration for this site-responsive community art project which honors Black life in Portland - past, present and future. Many thanks to sponsor @CoffeeByDesign, and to @Portland_Ovations and @IndigoArtsAlliance for presenting this important work.

For decades now, I have created safe spaces for people from all walks of life to tell their stories, become better leaders, innovate, collaborate, create, listen to themselves and others, play and connect. The Corkins Exchange has been a vital part of this work. The nature, the participants, the trust and support - everything comes together for a truly magical and transformative experience. The last two groups were exceptional and it was a pleasure to work with all of them. A big thank you to my fellow hosts and partners in crime @gniszk @brendabergen and #sarahmelk , and all the support from @elisa_minx @danajoyaltman , Philo and Vicky and their crew. And for all the participants, I have nothing but gratitude for all your courage and trust.
